Reference Manager 10 – Database-specific instructions for import filters and direct export
This document contains instructions for importing references from online library databases and other online sources, and is intended for use in conjunction with the Using Reference Manager manual (document IS117).

UCL’s online library catalogue / All subjects / Mark the relevant records within eUCLid directly from the Brief Display screen and select Save/Mail at the top of the screen. The predefined format should be ISI ResearchSoft Tagged Output Format. Enter the email subject and your email details towards the foot of the screen, then click Go.
The data will be sent to your email address. Open the email and save the email as a .txt file (remember the name and location of your file).
Import the data from the files using the Reference Manager RIS.cap import filter. / Ris.cap
Web of Knowledge
Includes Web of Science (Science Citation Index, Social Sciences Citation Index, Arts and Humanities Citation Index), BIOSIS Previews, ISI Proceedings / All subjects / Web of Science links directly to Reference Manager so there is no need to save the results to a file first. However you must have a Reference Manager database available for the search results to be stored in.
Mark the references you wish to import and click on Add to Marked List then Marked list. Select the fields you wish to export, then choose Export to reference software. Choose Reference Manager from the list of available reference manager software then browse to select the database to which you wish to import the results. Click Open to import. / None needed - links directly to Reference Manager, so no need for a filter. You must have a Reference Manager file available to import into.
CSA databases:
LISA
LLBA / Library & Information Science; Linguistics / Mark the required references and click on Save, Print, Email. Click on Save and save as a .txt file. / Csa-lisa.cap
Csa-llba.cap / Data in the Issue and Pagination fields is sometimes corrupted in the import process.

#SERFILE / Wide range of subjects / WebSPIRS databases now export directly to Reference Manager.
Mark the references you wish to save.
Click the save (diskette) icon.
In the next screen use the Export to Procite, Endnote or Reference Manager option. You can then select your Reference Manager file from the Select Reference Manager Database window which appears. / None needed - links directly to Reference Manager, so no need for a filter. You must have a Reference Manager file available to import into. / For databases marked * some references import without author names.
For databases marked ** all records are flagged as Journals.
For databases marked *** the title doesn’t import at all.
For databases marked #, the import doesn’t work.
PubMed / Biomedical sciences / Note that you can access PubMed direct from the Internet Search window in Reference Manager, but if searching for a subject you are advised to go to PubMed itself to get a better set of results.
From the PubMed web pages, mark the references you wish to import. From the Display list, select MEDLINE and click Display button. From the Send to list, select File and choose to save the file with a suitable name and a .txt extension. / PubMed.cap
PsycINFO via Ovid (WebSPIRS) / Psychological medicine / Mark the references you wish to save. Click the save button, and in the next screen ensure short field labels is selected and click OK to save the records to disk. Save your file as a .txt file & remember its name & where you saved it. / Webspirs-PsycInfo-UCL.cap
The Cochrane Library
www.thecochranelibrary.com / Medical sciences / Mark the references you wish to save. Click the 'Export Selected Citations' button at the bottom of the page. Choose to save just the citation or the citation and abstract, and choose the PC file type. Click Go and save the file. / Wiley-Cochrane-CENTRAL.cap / Only references from the CENTRAL database can be imported at present.
British Medical Journal
www.bmj.org / Clinical medicine / BMJ links directly to Reference Manager so there is no need to save the results to a file first. However you must have a Reference Manager database available for the search results to be stored in.
Refine your search until you get a good match to your intended query and an acceptable number of resulting hits. Select appropriate results per page to match your number of resulting hits. Click Download all. Select Reference Manager from left margin. The 'Select Reference Manager Database' window opens. Select a database in which to import the records and click Open. / None needed - links directly to Reference Manager, so no need for a filter. You must have a Reference Manager file available to import into. / The record marking option and Go button may cause your connection to stall
Engineering Village:
Compendex (Engineering)
Inspec (physics, computing, electronic engineering, IT) / Engineering & Physical Sciences / Engineering Village links directly to Reference Manager so there is no need to save the results to a file first.
Mark the records you want and click the download button. From the menu which appears choose the RIS, EndNote, ProCite, Reference Manager option. Click Download and in the File download window which appears click Open (not Save). The 'Select Reference Manager Database' window opens. Select a database in which to import the records and click Open. / None needed - links directly to Reference Manager, so no need for a filter. You must have a Reference Manager file available to import into.
International Bibliography of the Social Sciences (IBSS) via Ovid (WebSPIRS) / Social sciences / Mark the references you wish to save. Click the save button, and in the next screen ensure short field labels is selected and click OK to save the records to disk. Save your file as a .txt file & remember its name and location. / WebSPIRS-IBSS.cap / OK for journal references, but not for book chapters, and may be problematic for monographs.
Metalib / All subjects / MetaLib links directly to Reference Manager so there is no need to save the results to a file first.
Mark the records you want using the "add to basket" icon. Click on "My Space" in the top menu - this will open your eShelf (basket). Select records from the eShelf which you want to download. Select “Email/Save Selected". In the window which opens, click "Save". In the Record format box, select "Citation manager" and click "Save" and you will be prompted for a Reference Manager database into which to download your data. / None needed - links directly to Reference Manager, so no need for a filter. You must have a Reference Manager file available to import into.
Zetoc
The British Library's electronic table of contents / All subjects / Mark the references you wish to save and click Download. Choose ‘short labels’ under Format, and select ‘Just tagged records’. Click Send file and save your file, remembering its name & where you saved it. / ZETOC mimas.cap
JSTOR
(links to full text ejournal articles) / All subjects / JSTOR links directly to Reference Manager so there is no need to save the results to a file first.
Click on Save Citation for each citation you wish to export or click on Save all citations on this page. Choose View saved citations. Click on Directly export citations into EndNote, ProCite or Reference Manager and in the File download window which appears click Open (not Save). The 'Select Reference Manager Database' window opens. Select a database in which to import the records and click Open. / None needed - links directly to Reference Manager, so no need for a filter.
