SCHOOL POLICY

  1. CAPACITY OF THE SCHOOL:
  2. The school can cater for 26 class units. At an average of 35 learners per general class, the carrying capacity of the school is 23XNATIONAL APPROVED CLASS SISE: 23X33 = 759
  3. Educators are an extremely scarce resource nationally. The School shall utilise the educator resource in the best interests of the learner. Hence, in spite of (a.) above, the school shall only admit as many learners as can be managed by the available educator personnel at the school.
  4. The general classrooms at the school have been constructed to cater for a maximum of 35 learners per class in order to efficiently deliver the curriculum to the learners.
  5. A leaner may not be denied admission to the school on the basis that the “school is over-crowded”. It is the responsibility of the school and the HOD to ensure that learners have places.
  1. ACCOMMODATION AT THE SCHOOL SHALL BE ADVERTISED AT THE DISCRETION OF THE SCHOOL AS FOLLOWS:
a.Assembly announcements
  1. Posters displayed at primary schools or newspaper advertisements.
  1. APPLICATION FORMS:

Any parent who wishes to enrol a learner must complete a provisional application form. On approval, the parent is given a registration form which must be completed and submitted with the necessary documents as well as a portion of the school fees as determined by the School Governing Body. In the event that a parent is unable to pay such fees, a payment plan and/or an application for school-fee concession must be submitted with the application.

  1. ADMISSION PERIOD:

The school processes the admission of learners during the third term of the year for the following academic year.

  1. ADMISSION OF LEARNERS WHO SHALL BE GIVEN PREFERRENCE:

4.1Learners whose parents serve on the staff of the school.

4.2Learners who reside within the demarcated service area: Effingham Heights; Avoca; Greenwood Park (on the West Side of North Coast Road); Kenville; Sea Cow Lake; Avoca Hills; and Duffs Road.

4.3Learners whose siblings have already been admitted to the school.

  1. LEARNERS WHO HAVE NOT GAINED ADMISSION TO SCHOOL:

The parents of learners who have not gained admission to school shall be informed telephonically or writing. These parents are advised to seek admission at another school.

  1. AGE CONSIDERATION:

A learner whose age exceeds the average age of learners in a particular grade by two years or more may be denied admission and referred to an ABETinstitution.

  1. CLOSING DATE FOR ADMISSION:

The last school day in October of the academic year or when the school is declared “FULL” by the SEM, whichever occurs first, shall be regarded as the closing date for admission.

  1. RESPONSIBILITY OF PARENTS:

Notwithstanding the fact that every effort shall be made by the school to keep in contact with parents, it is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to conduct enquiries with respect to the schools admission policy, the availability of accommodation, the criteria relevant to the admission of learners in different grades, the outcome of applications, etc.

  1. LEGISLATIVE AUTHORITY

In terms of the legislative authority contained in:

  1. The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, Act 108 of 1996 (section 29),
  2. The South African Schools Act, Act 84 of 1996 (section 3-5),
  3. The National Education Policy Act, Act 27 of 1996 and Admission Policy for Ordinary Public Schools (Government Gazette No. 19377 dated 19 October 1998,
  4. Regulations relating to Admission of Learners to Public Schools , Provincial Notice No. 5262 dated 5 March 1998 and,
  5. KZN Circular No:58 of 1999 - Admission Policy for Ordinary Public Schools for 2000", the following was resolved for our school:

9.1With regard to the admission of learners into Grade 8, preference shall be given in terms of 5.above.

9.2The Governing Body shall only consider applications for accommodation beyond the immediate service area of the school after the provisions of 5. above have been applied. This clause is in keeping with the provisions of Section 6.8 of KZN Circular No: 58 of 1999, which entitles parents to seek admission at the school of their choice.

  1. APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION OF LEARNERS INTO GRADE 12:

The school shall not admit any pupil into grade 12 in any academic year, unless very special circumstances abound.

  1. APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION OF LEARNERS INTO GRADES 9,10 & 11:

This will depend on the availability of space with respect to the carrying capacity of the school. Such applications will only be considered at the beginning of the admission year, after the pass-fail statistics of the previous year have been determined.

  1. MOVMENT OF FAMILY INTO THE SERVICE AREA:

In spite of the provisions in 5.and 8. above, a learner whose family moves into the service area during the course of the academic year maybe considered for admission.
