Job title: Education Team Leader

Reports to: Head of Education

Salary: £24,000 to £26,000

1.  Purpose of the job

To project manage the development and delivery of a school-based waste education programme and develop and deliver school based activities and community training on behalf of the Big Tidy Up Campaign.

2.  Budget Responsibility and decision making

Tracking and managing Big Tidy Up Campaign, North Somerset (NSC) and Bristol City Council (BCC) waste education delivery budget, responsibility for decisions related to managed staff and programme delivery.

3.  Principal accountabilities

1.  Develop and implement a programme of environmental education for foundation and secondary schools on behalf of the Big Tidy Up Campaign.

2.  To develop and deliver community leaders training on behalf of the Big Tidy Up Campaign.

3.  Work with the Head of Education and Education team to:

·  Project manage the existing waste education programme across NSC and BCC

·  develop new school based projects to facilitate action on waste reduction and recycling

4.  Managing and overseeing the development of two Waste Education Officers.

5.  Maintain effective working relationships with the campaign partners to ensure effective provision of recycling and education services to schools.

6.  Monitor and meet agreed programme targets, expected outputs and outcomes on waste education programmes and the Big Tidy Up Campaign.

7.  Report to both the Head of Education and campaign partners on delivery targets and achievements. This includes contributing to quarterly reports prepared for project funders.

8.  Attend Waste Watch and project meetings as appropriate.

9.  Undertake other tasks as may be determined from time to time by the line manager.

4.  Supervision of employees – complexity of ‘leadership’, number of direct reports, reporting level

The post holder leads and manages a team of two waste education staff.

Reports directly to the Head of Education.

5.  Contact with others – level of customer contact internal/external

This is a customer facing role and contact is at all levels. Primary contact will be with schools including staff, pupils, governors, parents and local education authorities. Other customers include partners Keep Britain Tidy (Big Tidy Up), NSC and BCC project as well as internal staff as necessary.

6.  Major challenge of the job

To project manage the development of the NSC and BCC Schools Campaign, manage a geographically diverse team. To develop and deliver the Keep Britain Campaign to schools and communities within the agreed timescales and budgets.

7.  Knowledge, skills and experience required

1.  A demonstrable track record of developing and delivering projects involving a number of project partners; including monitoring and evaluation.

2.  Demonstrable experience of delivering educational activities in a primary and secondary school environment.

3.  Knowledge of the National Curriculum, Sustainable Schools and Eco-Schools initiatives.

4.  Previous experience or interest in learning how to deliver training sessions.

5.  Experience of managing staff and financial resources.

6.  Strong organisational skills and a diplomatic approach.

7.  The ability to work largely in a self-directed manner while maintaining good working relationships with project partners.

8.  Excellent communication skills; in particular for report writing and giving presentations.

9.  A genuine commitment to environmental sustainability on a personal level as well as a desire to encourage others to use resources more sustainably.

10.  Computer literacy in dealing with standard Microsoft word processing, spreadsheet, database and communication packages.

11.  A commitment to equal opportunities.

12.  Willingness to work evenings and weekends as required and to spend short blocks of time away from home for meetings or special events.

8.  Other information

This full-time position is fixed term to 31 July 2010 with a possible extension subject to funding.

This post may involve driving in and around London. Applicants must be comfortable doing so as well as holding a clean UK driving licence.

This position will require regular travel and short blocks of time away from home.
