Puppy Schedule
Around 5:30 a.m. let the puppy out of the kennel and say “Potty outside” and take the puppy out right away. She/he should poop and pee.
After the puppy is done, bring her/him back inside and feed/water. Feedthe puppy twice a day according to the amount on the back of the food you are feeding. Even if the puppy doesn’t eat, eventually she/he will catch on and eat during that time.
Around 7:30, the puppy goes in the kennel. I say “kennel up.” Start by giving a treat when the puppy goes in the kennel and praise her/him. You may have to put the puppy in the kennel in the beginning but still praise her/him while doing it. Eventually the puppy will go in the kennel on her/his own when they hear “kennel up.” When you feel the puppy goes to the kennel on their own when told, you can slowly back off giving the treats. The puppy stays in the kennel during the day while you are at work. When I potty train a puppy, they are in the kennel from 7:30-4:00.
Around 4 p.m. let the puppy out of the kennel and do what you did when you let her/him out in the morning. Every time you let the puppy out of the kennel, she/he must go outside (even if they haven’t been in there very long). This will help with potty training.
If no one can watch the puppy while she/he is out of the kennel, you need to put her/him in the kennel. If you catch her pottying in the house, say “NO! Potty outside” and take the puppy out right away – even if they have already gone on the floor.
Anything you catch the puppy chewing on that they aren’t supposed to, say “No” and give the puppy one of their toys.
The key to training is being consistent and firm. The puppy is able to stay in the kennel all night and during the day without having an accident so never let her/him out in the middle of the night. Puppies are a lot like babies. If you start letting them out in the night, they will continue to do it. To help with this, take away the water around 6-7 (you will have to adjust the time to your puppy).
