MEDIA TECHNICIAN

We are seeking to appoint a Technician to provide support for the Department of Creative Arts and Technologies. This is a large department with a teaching team of sixteen. The Department runs courses that cover a number of specialisms, including game design, video editing, poster design and specific workshops in our television studio.

The department has excellent facilities, including art and media studios with classrooms designed to run game design and moving image editing software; audio visual equipment and a fully operational television studio. The department is currently supported by an art technician and the primary focus of this appointment will be to provide resource based support for students working in media and film department.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

The ideal applicant for this role is someone who enjoys technical tasks and can demonstrate energy, common sense and enthusiasm whilstworking in a fast-paced environment. The role requires a positive ‘can-do’ attitude, a good and appropriate sense of humour and the ability to work flexibly. The suitable applicant will be someone who understands the ethos of the College and has a strong sense of resilience to work with both staff and students in a large and varied department.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:

  • Experience in managing a resource driven area with an emphasis on tidiness and organisation.
  • A desire to create/maintain meticulous systems for stock ordering and replenishing.
  • Maintaining a fully-operational television studio
  • Well organised and methodical working practices e.g.to organise and coordinate the mediastorage cupboards.
  • Aprofessional and technically supportive approach to students and staff.
  • Flexibility, patience and resourcefulness.
  • Basic DIY skills and a willingness to undertake first line mechanical servicing e.g.digital cameras and software updates (where possible, training will be provided).
  • A willingness to participate in the lifting of heavy loads and the use of ladders, e.g. for hanging work in display areas (with training).
  • The technical ability to guide and advise students in the creative use of all departmental equipment/software (where possible training will be provided).
  • Strong communication skills and an enjoyment of team work.
  • An ability to take responsibility, show initiative and solve problems with minimum supervision.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Specific responsibilities

  • To keep a record of equipment and consumable resources which logs the movement, status and repair of equipment and materials within the Department (including the maintenance of an inventory for student loan equipment)
  • To monitor and maintain a consistent stock of consumable materials for all courses, order from specialist suppliers and sourcethe most cost effective options
  • To model an expectation of respect through sensible, economical use of materials, equipment and resources
  • To assist in the checking-in of deliveries of consumable stock and maintaining an accurate overview of its quantity, availability and storage
  • To prepare the television studio an editing rooms for classes by restocking and replenishing resources
  • Deliver practical workshops (where relevant) to staff and students
  • To keep the areas and equipment clean and tidy and to encourage the students to observe good working practices in all areas
  • To be responsible for first-line maintenance and repair of equipment and arrangement of professional repair where necessary
  • To comply with Health and Safety policies and procedures and assist in ensuring that good Health and Safety practices are followed across the department
  • To assist teaching staff in exhibiting student work within college, including open evenings
  • To carry out PAT testing of all departmental equipment
  • To carry out such other duties as the Head of Department or Principal may reasonably require

CONTRACTUAL INFORMATION

Post Title:
/ Creative Arts and Technologies Technician.
Reporting to: / Head of Creative Arts and Technologies (CATs).
Salary: / Onpoint 18 of the Sixth Form Support Staff Scales, currently
£16,804 per annum (Please note more may be available for a demonstrably highly qualified candidate).This rate is for a full year post and is then prorated for a term-time and 35 hours contract.
Hours of duty:
Holiday entitlement: / 35 hours per week, 8.30 a.m. – 4.30 p.m. Monday to Friday, with a 1 hour break for lunch.
Holidays taken outside of term-time.

The successful candidate will have the choice whether or not to join the Local Government Pension Scheme. The College currently contributes a monthly sum equivalent to 13.1% of your salary, whilst staff at this salary level contribute 5.3%
