CHORAL CONDUCTING 1 SYLLABUS

MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, FRIDAY

1:30 CONTACT HOURS PER DAY • 13:30 CONTACT HOURS FOR 3 WEEKS

OBJECTIVE

The main objective is to develop basic conducting skills for beginners. Focus will be on musicality as well as technique. There will also be a strong emphasis on knowing the musical content thoroughly before conducting. The instructor will work with each student to develop skills at her/his own level and will work on individual problems.

SPECIFIC AREAS

• beat patterns: 2, 3, 4, 6/8

• hand/arm shape and position

• posture and stance

• preparation beats in each meter

• varying tempos and meter changes

• basic dynamics

• basic cueing of entrances in unison, canon, and simple two-part songs

• cut-offs

• shaping phrases

• basic score analysis

• development of a sense of leadership in front of a group
