Native Language Guide
The Montessori American Indian Childcare Center Native Language Guidewill promote thevision of the MAICC is ‘to be the premier American Indian model of early childhood opportunity’ and work to achieve the mission to address the early childhood needs and the academic achievement gap of American Indian children through revitalizing the language and culture. The Native Language Guide will be offered $18 - $20/hour, temporary full time employment through June 30, 2017.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES OF Native Language (D/Lakota or Ojibwe) Guide
Education Programming
- Share cultural stories and songs with the children, ensuring a positive approach that promotes healthy values and practices.
- Share presentations with children in the native language in environment as often as possible, speaking as much native language in the presence of children
- Assist in the development of new materials that reflect the native culture including family relations, community structure and roles and responsibilities of community members.
- Participate in programming and special events, attends all work related meetings including staff meetings and language assessment team meetings, spark imagination, build self-esteem and help children discover new things each day
Admission and Enrollment
- Develop and maintain a positive relationship with the parents of the children enrolled in the School programs.
- Assist with recruitment of children, and Assist in preparing the children to transition into their elementary experience.
Parent and Public Relations
- Participate in all programs, including Family Nest Session, offered by the Center, ensuring that families have access to cultural parenting practices and traditional values that promote healthy values.
- Collaborate with other area schools, organizations, and community groups as appropriate, to enhance and enrich MAICC educational culture and experience. Keeping abreast of trends and changes in early childhood education.
- Represents MAICC in the community at large.
QUALIFICATION OF THE Native Language (D/Lakota) Guide:
Proven fluency in speaking the language and good written fluency in writing the language
Enthusiastic commitment to the Montessori philosophy and be articulate when speaking of the schools’ philosophy and goals
Demonstrated passion and commitment to the education of all children with an emphasis on academic excellence embedded in the American Indian culture and language
Minimum of three years of direct service to the American Indian community and/or classroom experience at either the pre-school or elementary level
A strong ability to work collaboratively to build a healthy team with staff, parents and other stakeholders
Excellent interpersonal skills and a commitment to open communication with the community and to maintaining strong visibility at the school on a day-to-day basis
Bachelor’s degree preferred; American Indian Eminence Teaching Credentials and/orAMI Montessori Assistant Credential (or willing to complete).
