18W AC Day 1 Info

  • In general, Program Orientations will occur for each program and will be customized. The same resources/supports typically provided through the Academic Orientation team (Sandy Heron/Linda Crane/Jennifer Thompson-Walker) will be provided. Details will include:
  • Program Orientation date/time: Program Coordinators/Orientation Leads (with consultation of their Chair) will be given the option of holding their Program Orientation in a regularly scheduled class of their choice, ostensibly the first class that the students will attend. A list of the first class for each program will be produced by Marie Theriault (Scheduling, RO) and communicated to the PC/OLs by email.PC/OLs are welcome to change to another class,time in the program. In very exceptional circumstances, a program can request their Program Orientation be in another location/time that week (outside of class time).Any changes would be coordinated through Academic Orientation Team and then the information would be housed for students on the College Student Orientation website: orientation.algonquincollege.com/acday1
  • Upper-level student volunteers and alumni: PC/OLs can recruit upper-level students or alumni to help during the Program Orientation. They will be responsible to let the students know what they are needed for and when they should be available. These students will no longer be required to take the Orientation volunteer training. (Note – if they would like to ALSO volunteer as a general Orientation volunteer – they should sign up themselves at and they can they can get more information by emailing )
  • Attendance:Attendance lists will be sent to Program Coordinators/Orientation Leads to be returned to Student Services at the end of the Program Orientation. General student volunteers can be dispatched to assist if required.
  • Orientation Funding:Ancillary Services will provide a menu of options to the Program Coordinators/Orientation Leads for their choosing; or PC/OLs are free to request the funds for their own use.
  • Resources:Resources and information will be available Monday, January 8 for Academics. This will include: AC Day 1 Guide (programming elements and College map). The day’s checklist will be sent to students electronically, as well as made available at H2H information booths across the College.
  • Welcome Message from President Jensen and the SA President will be shown in Program Orientation.
  • College Orientation activities through Student Services team will continue as per usual:
  • Welcome coffee tables (at the entrances to ACCE, the Student Commons, and in C building corridor, adjacent to the former Ignite Centre (C151);
  • Indigenous Singer;
  • AC Card/U-Pass/Parking/Lockers;
  • eText Support booth (outside Connections);
  • Student Tech Support;
  • AC Tours;
  • Workshops (Intro to Tech@AC);
  • Hot 89.9 in Student Commons Lobby;
  • Spartacat (throughout campus);
  • Pop-Up Food Stations (throughout campus, focusing on congested
    areas);
  • Financial Aid and Student Awards pop-up location in the AC Hub;
  • International Education Centre (information drop-in);
  • Students’ Association – including Archery Tag in the Gym, Laser Tag in SA Sports Facility, Zumba in the Fitness Zone, food samples in The Observatory, games in Clubs and Community space, passive programming in the Pride Centre (colouring, crafts, refreshments), and Algonquin Commons Theatre tours:
  • Snowshoeing on the Student Commons front lawn:
  • Large scale social event in the evening (performer to be confirmed by the Students’ Association).
  • Student volunteers for the day will be solicited through the Volunteer Database and invited to participate as their schedules permit (coordinated by Rebecca Sun, Co-Curricular Record and Volunteerism Coordinator).
  • AC Day 1 will be branded throughout the campus through the use of flags, floor stickers, digital screens, and banners.
  • Student Services communications team will work alongside Corporate Marketing to ensure a strong social presence.
