THE ALPHA GAMMA CHAPTER OF THE DELTA GAMMA SOCIETY ANNA DUNEVANT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Alpha Gamma Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, an organization for key women teachers, provides a $500.00 non-repayable grant-in-aid to award to a deserving female student who is planning to further her education in the area of teaching.

Delta Nu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated provides need based scholarships to graduating seniors based on academics and service to community.

THE AVICIA HOOPER THORPE EXCEL SCHOLARSHIP

The Avicia Hooper Thorpe Excel Scholarship is awarded annually to a high school graduate of the DanvillePublic School System. The Avicia Hooper Thorpe Excel Scholarship is named in honor of a Danville educator who served as a model of excellence. Born in 1908, Mrs. Thorpe taught for 33 years and is active in the Danville Community.

Eligibility:The applicant must:

  • Be a member of an underrepresented ethnic group
  • Have an outstanding high school academic record
  • Be recognized for his/her exemplary character
  • Be a senior
  • Have been accepted at a college or university offering a 4-year baccalaureate degree

How to Apply:Complete the Local Universal Scholarship Application (LUSA) located in the scholarship file in the Guidance Office or on the GW website. Additional information is located in the scholarship file. In addition to the LUSA, the applicant must provide two letters of reference, an official transcript, proofof college acceptance and be available for a personal interview.

Deadline:The completed application and supporting documents are due March 15 to Ms. McKinnie in Guidance.

THE ROY “BANKS” BREEDLOVE SCHOLARSHIP

The Roy Banks Breedlove Scholarship program awards up to a $1,000.00 stipend to a student graduating from high school who will/has enroll in an accredited four-year institution of higher learning to pursue a degree. Mr. Breedlove, a centenarian, was born July 22, 1905 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia and lived to the age of one hundred two.

Eligibility:The applicant must:

  • Be a graduating senior
  • Reside in Danville or Pittsylvania County schools
  • Continue their education in a four year institution of higher learning

The Builders & Associates of Southern Virginia will award a scholarship valued at$1,000. There is no specific field in which a recipient must major.

  • Have a need for monetary assistance
  • Be involved in some form of community service (club, hospital work, etc)
  • Submit SAT scores, which are considered but eligibility is not based on this factor.

SARA LANIER TABB OLIVER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP –JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY

The Sara Lanier Tabb Oliver Memorial Scholarship is a renewable scholarship endowed by the TOWN Foundation that is awarded annually. Sara Oliver and her husband, Thomas, both attended JamesMadisonUniversity. He was from a poor family and made a promise to himself that if ever he became successful, he would see to it that others did not have to endure a similar struggle to receive a college education.

Eligibility:The applicant must:

  • Be female
  • Be an in-coming freshman (high school senior)
  • Exhibits extreme financial need
  • File the FAFSA – received at the processing center

by 3-1-12

  • Demonstrates academic success
  • Be a Virginia resident

Award Amount:$32,000 over a four-year period ($8,000 a year)

DANVILLE COMMUNITY COLLEGE RECOGNITION OF ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP

DanvilleCommunity College Board has provided funds so that each public high school in the DCC service region could award the Recognition of Achievement Scholarship. This scholarship valued at $600 is to be awarded to the student from George Washington High School with the highest GPA at the end of the first semester of the senior year who will be attending Danville Community College. Please see Ms. McKinnie in Guidance once you have received notice from DCC that your application has been received. Ms. McKinnie must have your name by April 12, 2012.

DANVILLE COMMUNITY COLLEGE EXCELLENCE IN ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP

The Excellence in Academic Achievement Scholarship is the second scholarship DanvilleCommunity College has permanently established for GeorgeWashingtonHigh School. This is the largest of the College Board awards and is reserved for the top five graduates of GW. It provides full tuition for two years for any of the top five graduates who will be attending DCC. Please see Ms. McKinnie in Guidance once you have received notice from DCC that your application has been received. Ms. McKinnie must have your name by April 12, 2012.

PEYTON SELLERS CHAMPION AWARD

DanvilleCommunity College awards the Peyton Sellers Champion Award to a graduating senior from one of the area high schools.

Eligibility:The applicant must:

  • Be a current high school graduate from Danville, HalifaxCounty or PittsylvaniaCounty
  • Major in a technical program
  • Have academic promise
  • Possess and display leadership potential

The Granville P. Meade Scholarship provides financial assistance to students who have achieved academically, but who are financially unable to attend college. This scholarship provides awards to seniors to attend one of Virginia’s public or private colleges or universities.

Eligibility:The applicant must:

  • Be a graduating senior
  • Upon graduation attend a Virginia public or private public university or college
  • Have financial need
  • Have demonstrated academic achievement

Award Amount:$2,000 per year renewable for four years

  • James W. Bryant, Sr. and James T. Collie Scholarship – for Pittsylvania County Public school graduates, prefer students pursuing education or nursing
  • John Watson Daniel Scholarship – for graduates in Danville, Pittsylvania, or Caswell County. Eligible students who are descendants of employees or retirees of John W. Daniel Construction Company may receive priority consideration
  • Danville Regional Medical Center Auxiliary/Volunteers Scholarship – for Danville Regional Medical Center employees, volunteers, and their immediate families

  • Arnold B. Porter & Elizabeth J. Porter Scholarship – for members of Fairview United Methodist Church who demonstrate a reasonable need for financial aid
  • Alger Pugh Memorial Scholarship – for GW High School athletes, with a preference given to football players
  • Percy and Velna Scearce Scholarship – for graduates in Danville, Pittsylvania or Caswell, who actively support their religious convictions, are merited and have financial need

The RoanokeValley Wrestling Association awards an annual scholarship in memory of Stan Parker.

THE WEBSTER AND ELIZABETH MARSHALL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

The Webster and Elizabeth Marshall Award is given annually to a student who graduates from a high school in the Danville Public Schools and is accepted to Averett University. The award is named in the memory of Webster Marshall and in honor of Elizabeth Marshall, to fulfill their desire to support education by assisting Danville Public Schools graduates who wish to continue their education at Averett University.

Eligibility:The applicant must:

  • Be graduate from a high school in the Danville Public Schools
  • Attend Averett University
  • Have a minimum 3.0 GPA

THE BOOKER SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

The Booker Award is granted yearly to two former Glenwood Elementary School students who graduate from a Danville Public High School. This award is named in memory of Jack and Ilah Tate Booker, who valued education, and in honor of their daughter, Margaret Booker Gabal, a dedicated educator.

Eligibility:The applicant must:

  • Have attended Glenwood for a minimum of three years
  • Have a GPA of 2.0

Award Amount:$1,000 renewable for three additional years

THE VIRGINIA HIGH SCHOOL LEAGUE ALLSTATE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

The Virginia High School League (VHSL) recognizes ten high school seniors representing all parts of the state of Virginia with the VHSL-Allstate Achievement Award. These students are recognized for excellence in the classroom and in athletic and academic activities. Each high school selects one female and one male for competition for this award.

Eligibility: The applicant must:

  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Have previously won at least one varsity letter or the equivalent in the VHSL sport of baseball, basketball, cheering, cross country, field hockey, football, golf, indoor track, lacrosse, outdoor track, soccer, softball swimming, boys or girls tennis, volleyball and wrestling in which they are applying for the award
  • Have involvement in activities outside of school (work, charities, etc)
  • Have two letters of support
  • Compose a 500 word essay describing how extracurricular activities have enhanced his/her educational experience

Award Amount: $1,000

THE ANDREW MULLLINS COURAGEOUS ACHIEVEMENT AWARD VIRGINIA HIGH SCHOOL LEAGUE

The Andrew Mullins Courageous Achievement Award recognizes a male or female student who has made significant contributions to one or more VHSL athletic and/or academic activity. The individual(1) either currently has or has overcome a serious illness, injury, or disability; (2) has overcome great adversity, such as challenging social or home situation, in a positive way; or (3) other extraordinary situations, where the student has displayed tremendous courage against overwhelming odds.
