Presentation of your expert group
You will take on the role from a particular discipline, as an expert, in order to better understand the impact that poultry farming on the Eastern Shore has on the health of the Chesapeake Bay.
You will produce a PowerPoint presentation to share the expertise you developed in your assigned discipline with others in your class and your instructor(s). Your presentation should include the following components and your reflections on some of the core questions (in italics):
- [In class activity with instructors] Use primary data or evidence from the discipline for which you are an expert that is relevant and important for addressing whether poultry farms have an effect on the health of the Chesapeake Bay. Certain datasets that are available via the web serve as excellent data. We have provided you with one or two via Blackboard as a starting point, but we expect you to find more as an expert. We will use two class periods to guide you through this process and encourage you to think about the norms and type of data you will use.
Before you search for the data, think about what data and evidence should be available for an expert such as yourself? You may use your systems maps as a starting point.
Once you have found the data, think about what are the standards of evidence and argument from your assigned discipline that must be met when addressing poultry farming?
What are the limits of the evidence and arguments and how do these limit conclusions you can make about poultry farming and suggestionsyou may make to pursue additional work in the area?
- Use graphics that help people who do not have expertise in your assigned discipline understand the key points and arguments you are making.
- Synthesize all of the data that you have collected along with readings in the literature to argue whether poultry farming does or does not have an impact with claims supported by reasoning.
What ideas from the discipline provide the rationale or reasoning for why this evidence is applicable to addressing whether poultry farming has an effect or not?
What are the ethical dimensions of poultry farming from the perspective of your expert?
