2017 ANNUAL CONFERENCE

New Approaches to Tourism Learning in Higher Education & Research on Coastal Tourism

7th-8thDecember 2017 at The View Hotel, Eastbourne

(hosted by the School of Sport & Service Management, University of Brighton)

This year, our pedagogic theme has been expanded to include a research theme on coastal tourism. The decision to include a research theme, in addition to our usual pedagogic theme and increasingly successful PhD Colloquium, was based on feedback from delegates at the successful 2016 Conference.

Speakers will provide us with the opportunity to reflect on experiences of new approaches to tourism learning in HEfrom an industry and academic perspective, with a particular focus on coastal destinations. Confirmed speakers to date include Phil Evans (Director of Tourism and Enterprise, Eastbourne Borough Council & ATHE Fellow) and Dr Anya Chapman (National Pier SocietyBournemouth University).

We are including a PhD Colloquium, sponsored again by the Family Holiday Association, to encourage students to present at an established conference, meet potential employers and get constructive feedback in a friendly, supportive environment. Therefore we are seeking submissions on:

New approaches to Tourism Learning in Higher Education:This theme focuses on new approaches in all aspects of curriculum and vocational development, teaching, learning and assessment in Tourism. As such, this might include students, alumni, industry partners or educational partners in the process.

Coastal Tourism Research:This research theme reflects our 2017 conference location in Eastbourne, a classic and modern English seaside town, and focuses on research connected with social, cultural, economic and environmental dimensions of coastal tourism.

VENUES

This year’s conference is to take place at The View Hotel, Eastbourne. Accommodation and theWednesday evening pre-Conference Welcome Receptionwill also be located here.The View Hotel Eastbourne, Grand Parade, Eastbourne, East Sussex, BN21 4DN(theviewhoteleastbourne.com).

On Wednesday 6th December, at the Welcome Reception at The View Hotel, Phil Evans will present a talk on The Tourism Scene in Eastbourne, which will set the tone for the conference in terms of tourism education and coastal tourism research.

The Conference Dinner (Thursday 7th December) is in The Royal Pavilionin the centre of Brighton. Built as a seaside pleasure palace for King George IV, it combines Regency grandeur with exotic styles from India and China (brightonmuseums.org.uk/royalpavilion).

CONFERENCE THEMES

We welcome abstracts around the following themes:

  • New approaches to Tourism Learning in Higher Education: Curriculum Development
  • New approaches to Tourism Learning in Higher Education: The Learning Experience
  • New approaches to Tourism Learning in Higher Education: Assessment
  • New approaches to Tourism Learning in Higher Education: Education, Industry or Government Partners
  • New approaches to Tourism Learning in Higher Education: Professional Development
  • Social, cultural, economic or environmental dimensions of coastal tourism research

It is expected that the papers will be delivered in many ways: conceptual, discursive, critical, workshop based, experiential, or information dissemination. We welcome delegates’ perspectives on the challenges and opportunities that teaching Tourism and getting the Tourism voice heard bring to us in all realms of Higher Education.

•PhD Colloquium: Progress in Tourism & Events

We encourage PhD researchers to present one specific aspect of their research (for example, focus on a specific theoretical perspective, discuss a particular challenge in data collection, or illustrate one particular theme emerged from their findings).

Abstracts should include background, practical implications, methods and/or data sources, and indicative findings of the paper. They should be submitted by email to 1st October 2017 using the attached abstract form. All abstracts will be subject to a review process.

The emphasis at the conference is on encouraging discussion and debate, so we ask you to present for just TEN minutes using no more than 3 PowerPoint slides; there will then be a further 10 minutes for discussion of your paper.

The peer review team will endeavor to review and decide on papers as they are submitted and, in order to confirm the inclusion of the paper in the conference, the presenters must register for the conference within two weeks of acceptance.
