Romeo and Juliet Project Option #4: Foil Face Off
TASK: You will create a poster that depicts the “face off” between a pair of characters that are foils. Remember that a foil is a character that provides a contrast to another character. The function of a foil is to highlight the opposite character’s qualities and personality. Therefore, you should determine which two characters from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet are foils (opposites) of each other. You will also write an analysis of the pair of characters that you select.
FACE OFF CRITERIA: Once you have selected the two characters that you have determined to be foils, you should create a poster that displays the “face off” between them. This should look like a typical advertisement for a boxing match, with a visual of one of the characters poised for the fight on each side of the poster. You should also include the following information: the characters’ names, where and when the battle will take place, the type of fight that will take place, the price of admission, and a tagline. The tagline should be a sort of slogan, a short and memorable phrase that advertises the fight. The poster should be colorful and creative, as well as original and neat. (You may not print off pictures to use as the visuals of your characters.) In addition, you must use a standard-sized poster board. (Notebook, copy, construction paper, etc. are not acceptable sizes.) (See the back of this paper for an example.)
ANALYSIS CRITERIA: In order to demonstrate how the characters are foils, you will write an analysis of them. This analysis should explain the characteristics and personality of each character, and point out how they are opposites and contrasts of each other. Be sure to use specific examples from the text in order to prove the characters are foils. Your analysis should be a minimum of two paragraphs in length (5 to 7 sentences each). You may neatly write your analysis in blue or black ink, or type it.
DUE DATE: At the start of class on ______. For each day your assignment is late, 10 points will be deducted from the final grade. This project counts as a test grade. You should also turn in your rubric with your project. If you do not have your rubric, 5 points will be deducted from the grade.
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: Remember that according to your course syllabus, actions such as cheating, comparing answers, copying homework, and plagiarism will result in a zero and disciplinary action. If you have any questions about plagiarism, check the PowerPoint on my website. ALL WRITING WILL BE EXAMINED USING A PLAGIARISM PROGRAM. ANY INSTANCE OF FOUR WORDS OR MORE PLAGIARIZED WILL RESULT IN AN AUTOMATIC ZERO, AND A REFERRAL.
