Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a one year full-time contract, fixed term position as a Research Assistant in Health & Information Technology with the School of Psychology and Centre for Pain Research at the National University of Ireland, Galway.

The project is an extension to the existing Health Research Board(HRB) funded Research Leaders award project focusing on multimorbidity, eHealth and chronic pain, and will include the development of a web platform for researchers and clinicians to collate and share data on multimorbidity, and the development of a new online course on e-health interventions.

This position is funded by the HRBKnowledge Exchange and Dissemination Scheme (KEDS) grantto Dr Brian McGuire and is available from 1st February 2016for a period of 12 months.

Job Description:

The Research Assistant will be required to assist with all elements of the research programme as they pertain to developing and testing online technologies (e.g. researching and evaluating online learning platforms, developing the web platform for researchers and clinicians, generating and integrating content, and managing both platforms as they develop).

The successful candidate will work under the direct supervision of Dr. Brian McGuire and alongside the existing RLA team within the Centre for Pain Research. Professional support will be provided by Dr. Jim Duggan, Discipline of Information Technology, NUI Galway.

Key responsibilities:

  • Providing IT research support (e.g. using a wide array of technologies and media including online treatment programmes, mobile phone technology, social media and telehealth services to provide psychological interventions to people with multimorbid conditions)
  • Contributing to publications for peer reviewed journals
  • Participating in team meetings
  • Contributing to the development of grant applications, including supporting the writing of bids for research grants
  • Contributing to and coordinating preparation of research reports for funders and other bodies.

Essential requirements:

  • Degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
  • Previous experience in software development, web development, web design, or similar
  • Ability to demonstrate strong research, analytical and writing skills, including accessing information quickly and strategically
  • Excellent communication skills, in particular, report writing and presentation skills
  • Attention to detail and strong organisational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and networking skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a small, dynamic team

Desirable requirements:

  • Post-graduate degree in a relevant field
  • Previous use of online, mobile phone and/or social media technologies in population health or health services research
  • Experience of presenting at academic meetings and/or publishing in peer reviewed journals

Salary:€32,173fixed, per annum.

Start date:1stFebruary 2016.
