Codebook for Problem Set #1

Data for this problem set come from the Young Adult Component of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979. The sample consists of 328 children age 15 or greater who were interviewed in 1994, 1996, and 1998. These children are progeny of women from another national sample, that was followed in great detail.

Table 1 lists the variables in the data (not all of these variables are used in the first problem set). Table 2 lists the wording of the variables listed in Table 1. Table 3 lists selected characteristics of these variables.

(all responses rated “0" rarely, none of the time, 1 day; “1" some, a little of the time 1-2

days; “2"occasionally, moderate amount of time, 3-4 days; “3" most, all of the time,

Sex before age 15: Subjects who reported sexual activity were asked: How old were you when

(respondents who answered 14 or less are coded 1, all others coded to 0).

Marijuana use before age 15: Subjects who reported marijuana use were asked How old were

you the first time you used marijuana?

(respondents who answered 14 or less are coded 1, all other 0)
