Graded Assignments Returned

Student assignments that are submitted by the stated due date will be graded and returned within 1 week of the due date.

Assignments/Late Work

The First Year Experience Seminar is partially a course about understanding and successfully completing a set of processes that contribute to your success. Assignments are not optional.

Assignments are due on the date stated on the Course Calendar. If the due date is on a class day, the assignment is due at the beginning of class. If the due date is not on a class day, the assignment is due by 11:59 p.m. Central. Assignments are not accepted through email.

I do not accept late or make-up work. Please keep the following in mind:

  • In-class exercises for which points are earned cannot be made up. We do in-class exercises in most of our class meetings.
  • If you are sick or otherwise unable to attend class on a day that an assignment is due, you must still turn in your assignment before our class start time or you will receive a zero for it.
  • Assignments may be turned in to the Academic Campus Services (ACS) office. Ask them to put it in my mailbox. The ACS will stamp your assignment with the date and time you turn it in. If you turn it in after class start time on the date it is due, it will not be accepted or graded.
  • Blackboard (Bb) assignments must still be turned in before the class start time on the due date.
  • Emailed assignments are not accepted or graded.

Extra Credit

There are no extra credit assignments in this course. The content assigned is designed to help you develop a set of processes that contribute to your success. All assignments are important and should be completed.

Teaching Methods

This course is structured into learning modules. A learning module may be completed in one class session or across multiple class sessions. Check the course schedule for class session topics. This course includes a service-learning component. You must complete a minimum of 4 service-learning hours. Learning strategies include: reading resources (textbooks, articles, lecture notes), in-class activities, written assignments, service-learning experiences, Internet research, quizzes, and discussions. Students are responsible for all concepts in assigned work.

Attendance/Participation

Attendance will be taken in this course. You are expected to be in your seat by the class start time and stay until class is dismissed. In addition, you are expected to actively participate in class activities.

Please understand that this attendance policy is not meant to be punitive, but to encourage you to develop a habit of consistent attendance in your college courses. The grades you earn in your college courses are directly related to your attendance.

  • If you do not attend a class session, an absence will be recorded for that day.
  • If you arrive more than 5 minutes late to class or leave before the class is dismissed, an absence will be recorded for that day. (Arriving late & leaving early causes a disruption to the learning environment.)
  • There are no excused absences in college. Exceptions to the attendance policy will be made only in rare circumstances and at the discretion of the instructor.

Attendance is required and is part of your final grade (50 pts).

(Recent CCSSE findings on high impact practices show that 76% of students report that all of their instructors clearly explained a class attendance policy that included consequences for not attending class. And the percentage of full-time students who never skipped class rose 12 percentage points (from 38% to 50%) between 2004 and 2014. – Engagement Rising, CCCSE, 2015)

You can view your attendance record in the Blackboard course site. Click on the Attendance link at the bottom of the course menu.

Administrative Withdrawal for Non-Attendance

  • An AW or WN grade is grade point neutral, but may have implications on financial aid. Please see a financial aid counselor if you have questions your financial aid eligibility.
  • Please note that I do not assign "AWs" or “Incompletes” to students who earn failing grades in the course.

Course Withdrawal

The student who simply stops attending class has not officially withdrawn from the class.

  • The deadline to withdraw from a course shall not exceed 3/4 the duration of any class.
  • Contact the Counseling Office at any TCC campus to initiate withdrawal from a course
(“W” grade) or to change from Credit to Audit.
  • Check the TCC Academic Calendar for deadlines.
  • Students who stop participating in the course and fail to withdraw will receive a course grade of “F,” which may have financial aid consequences for the student.

Before withdrawing from the course, please talk with me about your concerns! There may be other options available.

Classroom Etiquette/Netiquette

Open and mutually respectful communication of varied opinions, beliefs, and perspectives during classroom or online discussion encourages the free exchange of ideas that is essential to higher learning and to the ability to learn from each other. The instructor reserves the right to terminate any discussion where these guidelines are violated.

  • Treat each other with respect
  • Use clear and concise language
  • Use correct spelling and grammar in all college-level communication
  • Avoid using ALL CAPITAL LETTERS in written communication as they can be interpreted as yelling
  • Be cautious when using humor or sarcasm as tone is sometimes lost in typed messages or misinterpreted in class discussions
  • Be careful with personal information (both yours and other's)
  • Stay on topic and within the scope of the course material
  • Give proper credit with referencing or quoting another source
  • Express differences of opinion in a respectful, non-critical way (respond to ideas and concepts, do not attack the person making them)

Academic Dishonesty

Academic dishonesty (cheating) is defined as the deception of others about one’s own work or about the work of another. Academic dishonesty or misconduct is not condoned or tolerated at campuses within the Tulsa Community College system. Tulsa Community College adopts a policy delegating certain forms of authority for disciplinary action to the faculty. Such disciplinary actions delegated to the faculty include, but are not limited to, the dismissal of disrespectful or disorderly students from classes. In the case of academic dishonesty a faculty member may:

  • require the student to redo an assignment or test, or require the student to complete a substitute assignment or test;
  • Record a "zero" for the assignment or test in question;
  • Recommend to the student that the student withdraw from the class, or administratively withdraw the student from the class;
  • Record a grade of "F" for the student at the end of the semester.

Faculty may request that disciplinary action be taken against a student at the administrative level by submitting such request to the Dean of Student Services.

Cell Phones & Other Electronic Devices

Multiple research studies have found that students learn more effectively and perform better on exams when they take notes by hand rather than on a laptop or other electronic devices.

To avoid distractions for you, other students, and the instructor, keep all cell phones, tablets, laptops, and other electronic devices silenced and put away during class meetings unless your instructor asks you to use them during class for some activity. Students that choose to access their cell phone (or other electronic devices) during class will be asked to put their cell phones up front at the instructor’s desk until the end of class or they will be asked to leave class due to non-compliance and they will be marked as absent for the day for leaving class early, as addressed in the course attendance policy as stated above.

Exceptions will be made to this policy for students who receive special accommodations from the Education Access Center.

Syllabus Change

Occasionally, changes to the syllabus may be necessary. Students will be notified of any changes to the syllabus in writing.

Institutional Statement

Each student is responsible for being aware of the information contained in the TCC Catalog, the TCC Student Policies & Resources Handbook, and semester information listed in the class schedule. All information may be viewed on the TCC website:

If class is cancelled due to inclement weather or an emergency situation, continue to do the course work as indicated on the course agenda.

Canceling Class

Sometimes it is necessary for a professor to cancel class due to a personal emergency or illness. In rare the rare instance that I cancel class, I will send an email to all students through Blackboard notifying each person of the cancelled class, and a Class Cancellation form will be posted on the classroom door. In most instances, you will be given an assignment the can be completed, submitted, or both through Blackboard in place of that day’s class meeting.

Tobacco Free College

Tobacco Free College: Tulsa Community College is a Tobacco Free college in accordance with the Governor’s Executive Order 2012-01 and Title 63 of the Oklahoma Statutes, Section 1-1523 which prohibits smoking or the use of any tobacco products in all public places, in any indoor workplace, and all vehicles owned by the State of Oklahoma and all of its agencies and instrumentalities.
