Andrea S. Cedfeldt, M.D., Assistant Dean for GME

SUBJECT: Minutes of the GMEC Meeting 4/28/2011

1. Dr. Girard announced that the institutional has been provided five years’ accreditation. We will receive the letter within 60 days with any additional information.

2. Drs. Karen Deveney and Crystal Hessman presented the Internal Review Report for Hematopathology. This is an exceptionally well run program, thanks to the leadership and advocacy of Dr. Guang Fan. The fellows are very pleased with their education. The Internal Review Committee has some suggestions for minor improvements and GMEC voted to approve the program, congratulating Dr. Fan for her outstanding job as program director.

3. Dr. David Sibell presented the request to GMEC for a change in the program director for Anesthesiology/Pain Management. After review Dr. Grace Chen’s CV, GMEC approved this transition, thanking Dr. Sibell for his years of service and welcoming Dr. Chen to her new role.

4. Dr. Tan Ngo announced the opening of the new call rooms in Sam Jackson Hall. They are quite comfortable and the lounge, workroom and locker rooms are an awesome addition. There is free coffee for house officers in the kitchen and a TV in the lounge.

5. Dr. Juliana Hansen presented the request for approval by GMEC of an integrated Plastic Surgery program. Currently, we have a 3 year Plastic Surgery program with 2 residents per year. This model requires that residents have already completed a full residency in general surgery or one of several other fields prior to applying for their second residency in Plastic Surgery. The integrated model would allow medical students to match directly into Plastic Surgery, do three years’ rotations in General Surgery here, followed by three years of Plastic Surgery. This model allows students to streamline their training, thus entering the workforce more rapidly. The integrated model also allows OHSU to be more competitive in recruiting top candidates for our Plastic Surgery program. The funding has been secured and there is a great need for Plastic Surgeons. GMEC voted to approve this request.

6. Christine Flores reported that E*Value has a new duty hours’ reporting system ready to launch in anticipation of the new duty hours requirements. One of the features of the reporting system is that any time a resident works over the hours, they will be required to submit a report via E*Value to the program director, thus facilitating one of the new duty hours requirements. Christine is happy to provide training to program directors or program coordinators about this, or any feature of E*Value.

7. GME has offered a new safety measure for sleepy residents: a voucher system for a free taxi ride home. The residents just call Radio Cab, provide a GME code and they will get a ride home from any Portland area hospital.

8. Nancy Saindo, Executive Director of Simulation, presented a thorough overview of the current and proposed simulation labs at OHSU. Her role is to provide coordinator and oversight for these various labs and assure access. Drs. JoDee Anderson, Rob Cloutier and Michael Seropian, along with Jesika Gavilanes and Sue Thurston were also in attendance and provided GMEC with thought provoking examples of how the sim labs are used for learners across all disciplines. JoDee was quite willing to help any program director with integrating simulation into their program. There was discussion about using this for not only building surgical skills, but teaching professionalism and teamwork, as well as using it for research activities. This is also a great recruitment tool.

Respectfully submitted and emailed to all Program Directors, Program Coordinators and GMEC Members.

Donald E. Girard, M.D.

Chair, GMEC
