Vocabulary
benchmark percents, percent, proportion, tax, tip, discount, commission
8.1B(S) The student understands that different forms of numbers are appropriate for different situations. The student is expected to select and use appropriate forms of rational numbers to solve real-life problems including those involving proportional relationships.
8.3B(R) The student identifies proportional or non-proportional linear relationships in problem situations and solves problems. The student is expected to estimate and find solutions to application problems involving percents and other proportional relationships such as similarity and rates.

Revised TEKS

7.4DProportionality. The student applies mathematical process standards to represent and solve problems involving proportional relationships. The student is expected to: solve problems involving ratios, rates, and percents, including multi-step problems involving percent increase and percent decrease, and financial literacy problems.

Prior Knowledge

Students will know benchmark percents.

Students will know how to convert fractions/decimals/percents.

Students will know how to find the percent, whole and part in problem situations.

Students will know the meaning of tax, tip, discount, and commission.

Materials needed:

o  1 copy of Café Menu Activity Your Order per student (file has 4/page)

o  1 copy of Café Menu Activity Recording Sheet per student (4 versions)

o  1 copy of Café Menu Activity Menu per group

o  Calculators (for checking)

o  1 copy of Practice Problems per student

Procedure

Café Menu Activity

This activity should be done over two days. On Day 1 put students into groups of four. Give each student an order form (Café Menu Activity Your Order) and a Café Menu Activity Recording Sheet. There are four versions of the recording sheet in the file labeled A – D. Each version has a different coupon, sales tax rate, and tip rate. Give each student in the group a different version of the recording sheet. Give each group one copy of the Café Menu Activity Menu as well. Using the menu, each student in the group should select one Appetizer, Entrée, Side, Dessert, and Beverage and then record the name of the item and price on their order form. Once all five items have been selected they should calculate their total. Encourage students to check each other’s order form for accuracy before proceeding to the next step. Once the order forms are completed and checked, each student should start working on their own recording sheet to answer the seven questions. The recording sheets are set up in two columns; the left column contains the questions and the right column is work space. Students need to stay in their group to complete the recording sheet even though they each have different versions. Questions 2 and 3 require information from all members of the group. Once all students have completed their recording sheet, distribute calculators to all students. Each member of the group should use a calculator to check the other three members’ recording sheets. As they are checking each other’s recording sheets if an error is found, they should circle the problem number and return the sheet to its owner for corrections. As each student checks a recording sheet, they should initial the bottom of the sheet to show they agree with all the calculations. All sheets will be checked three times within the group. This activity will take approximately two days to complete with Day 1 involving the students completing the activity and Day 2 being used for checking.
