Internship overview

ILiS communicates with our many and varied stakeholders in a range of ways, for different reasons and at different times. We need to ensure that our communications are working well for us. We need a review of our current communications mediums and messages so that they are effective, to identify opportunities we are missing out on and to build a Strategy around this. We also need to improve our current communication outputs including our website content and the placement of our 'deliverables', such as guidance publications. The Strategy will include an action plan to be developed and delivered.

Alongside the detailed scope and objectives set out above, the job will entail the Intern working as a team member, and working with and building up relationships with external stakeholders. The role involves targeting communications so that we meet the needs of our project plan for stakeholders.

The opportunity is desk based and quite broad based, building experience of a range of activities such as reviewing, analysing, reporting, planning and delivery whilst taking account of the capacities of a small third sector project.

The intern will be part of a very busy team and will need to think about time-management and setting targets because the internship is time-limited.

Main duties and tasks

1. Gather and review evidence - of current communication methods, effectiveness etc.

2. Gather information on communication needs

3. Analyse and report on evidence and information

4. Produce a strategy including an action plan (and deliver the action plan as far as time allows) to include refreshing ILiS website content and increasing the profile of ILiS and its work via mediums including websites, social media and press profile.

Person Specification:

Essential

  • Evidence of good written skills including the ability to produce clear, accessible and accurate information for a variety of audiences and via different mediums.
  • Knowledge of different methods of communication including websites and social media and how to write for these and how to use them effectively.
  • Knowledge and awareness of the issues facing disabled people, independent living, equality and diversity.
  • Good time management skills and ability to work on own, setting and meeting targets.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of the social model of disability and human rights for disbled people.
  • Experience of working as part of a team
  • Good level of personal communication for communicating with colleagues and others including taking on board other people's ideas and needs.

Additional Information

We are a team of disabled people working in a very busy project which is mostly policy based. Our stakeholders are Disabled People's organisations, Scottish Parliamentarians and Councillors, civil servants, Local Authorities, scrutiny bodies and many others. We have a work plan in place for the year. We do NOT require an intern to have the ability to undertake technical website building (we have a contractor for this), but to create content and upload it. We would like to see innovation and creativity which takes account of our aims, audiences and limited financial resources.
