Our New President - Scirard Lancelyn Green MA (Oxon)
July 2013 saw Scirard Llancelyn Green take the Presidency of the Rotary Club of Neston for the second time. Scirard, who is also a Paul Harris Fellow resides at Poulton Hall, Bebington , Wirral. He is a family man, married to Caroline and has two sons, Randal and Arthur. He was educated at DaneCourtPreparatory School, BradfieldCollege and MertonCollege, Oxford. He is Managing Director of Lancelyn Lighting Ltd which he established in 1970.
Outside employment his interests are many and varied. He is a Full Gold Member and former Gold Judge of the Ski Club of Great Britain, he is involved in ice dancing, water skiing and wind surfing. He is Secretary of Liverpool Organists’ Association and has a passion for classical and sacred music being a member of several choral singing and operatic groups. He is indeed a man of many talents and Neston are lucky to have him as their President this year.
The Rotary Club of Neston ran this competition at NestonHigh School in March 2013 and plan to run itagain in Spring 2014. This is a great competition that can be run in and out of school and could also provide activities for Girl Guides, Scouts, St Johns Ambulance groups over the next few months if interested.

If you’re out at a Summer recital or listening to young people ‘jam’ in the park—you might just hear someone who would like to enter this competition which has been organised locally by the Rotary Club of Neston for the last four years.
The first round of the competition is scheduled to take place on Saturday 2nd November 2013 and all are welcome to enter. The second round will take place on Saturday 1st February 2014, both events are at Poulton Hall (CH63 9LN).
In 2014 Harrods are sponsoring the RIBI National Winners prizes so there’s a good reason to enter!

Once again the Rotary Club of Neston have sponsored a local student Adam Derrick to attend and participate in the RYLA scheme. RYLA is Rotary's leadership training programme for young people.
The principle aims of RYLA is to provide an effective training experience for selected young people and potential leaders, to encourage leadership of young people by young people and to recognize publicly young people who are rendering service to their communities.
In District 1180 the RYLA event takes the format of an activity training course for selected young people at the Arthog Activity Centre near Barmouth in North Wales.

Vice President David Brigden and Secretary Trevor Irvin enjoyed lunch with the Senior Management Team at NestonHigh School in July 2013. This however was lunch with a difference as all had been prepared and was served by Year 10 GCSE pupils. This was the first time they had done this and what an excellent job they made of it. Hopefully some of them will be entering the RIBI Young Chef Competition in 2014.

On Friday 8th March 2013 Steve Dool (Headteacher at Neston High School ) and David Brigden (District Co-ordinator for the Technology Tournament) welcomed eighteen teams from local schools and colleges to Neston High School for this years Technology Tournament organised by the Rotary Club of Neston.
Last Autumn schools and colleges were invited to enter teams of four pupils in each of the following age categories Foundation (Key Stage 3 - ages 11-14), Intermediate (Key Stage 4 - ages 15-16 and Advanced (Key Stage 5 - ages 16+). This year the event attracted eighteen entries ( 9 Foundation , 6 Intermediate and 3 Advanced)
The teams were presented with a problem which was based on engineering and scientific principles and they, as a team , had to attempt to solve it.
The Judges ( educationalists, engineers and scientists) assessed each team on the basis of their planning and teamwork, design analysis, design development, a portfolio which presents a visual record of the above and whether they have addressed the challenge and demonstrated that they have solved the problem.All this they did in less than a day !
The winners in each age category were:
Foundation Level : NestonHigh School
Intermediate Level: NestonHigh School
Advanced Level: NestonHigh School

Small club makes large donation to the International Charity ‘Riders for Health’Over the last two years Neston Rotary Club has been raising money for this charity and this Summerwe presented a cheque for £2025 to Riders for Health .
Riders for Health is an international social enterprise managing and maintaining vehicles for health-focused partners in sub-Saharan Africa. Their expertise in transport management enables health workers to deliver vital health care to rural communities on a reliable and cost-effective basis. Riders for Health manages over 1,400 motorcycles, ambulances and other four-wheel vehicles used in the delivery of health care in seven countries across Africa. They work with ministries of health, international and African non-governmental organisations (NGOs), private-sector organisations, local community-based organisations and religious groups, to improve access to health care for 12 million people. The majority of the population of sub-Saharan Africa live in rural areas where the best roads are little more than dirt tracks. Public transport is infrequent and delivering health care on foot or by bicycle between sparse villages is an exhausting and ineffective task. Put simply, without reliable transport the millions of pounds that is invested in vaccines, drugs, bed-nets, condoms and trained health professionals every year will be wasted because they will fail to get to where they are needed on time.As well as supporting the local community The Rotary Club of Neston has donated to this charity for many years.
Kids Out to Chester Zoo.
Last month 4 Rotarians , 9 children and 6 teachers from WoodfallSchool, Neston enjoyed their visit to Chester Zoo.
One Rotarian was heard to say ‘ Just like taking the grand children out and every bit as well behaved’.As in previous years the children appreciated the "treat" and we enjoyed their company!
Rotary Sail and Nature Camp - Summer 2013

When I received the e-mail saying that I had been given a place on the 2013 Rotary Sail and Nature Camp I felt nervous yet very excited. I didn’t know what to expect from the camp when I was sitting on the plane going to Milan and it was a big milestone for me in my life as it was the first trip I had been on without my family or school. The camp lasted two weeks and apart from me there were 15 other young people from all over the world. The first five days we learned to sail on LakeComo; probably one of the most beautiful place I have been to! The sailing really helped us to develop as a group and get to know each other. The instructors at the LegaNavaleSailingSchool were very professional and we learnt a lot from them over the 5 days.
We then moved on and went to live with host families in Meraté for just over a week. I really enjoyed experiencing first hand the way Italian people live their lives and you can’t experience Italy properly without trying some pizza! We went on days out every day as a group to various places such as the theme park ‘Gardaland’. We also visited various towns and villages. However my two favourite days out were those to the Monza Race Circuit and the FerrariMuseum. At the circuit I got the chance to ride in Supercars such as Lamborghini and Maserati. I learnt about the history of Ferrari and also managed to see the beautiful new ‘La Ferrari’ worth 1.3 million!
My favourite evening was the last one. It was extremely emotional for everyone involved with the group and none of us wanted to go home! We had a party at a beautiful Italian villa in the country with all of the host families and organisers of the camp and it was a truly fantastic sendoff after an unbelievable 2 weeks!
This camp made me realise how wonderful Rotary International can be and has given me an urge to travel the world and meet new people.I will also keep in touch with my host Rotary family and friends and hope to visit again in the future. I now know that you cannot put a price on friendship and that is what has made this whole experience priceless!!

Once again the Rotary Club of Neston were in attendance with their Human Fruit Machine which proved to be as popular as ever!!
On a hot and sunny day Neston’s magic balls were bouncing out of their buckets to the amusement of crowd

Choir and conductor
The vocal ensemble Resurrection -Voskresenije in Russian - was founded by Jurij Maruk in 1993. It consists of seven to ten professional female and male vocalists. The repertoire of the ensemble includes Russian Sacred Music as well as folk music. Guest performances in Germany, Switzerland, Norway, Austria, the UK, France and Italy have met with great success, and the choir has recorded several CDs of their repertoire, which includes some specially composed arrangements of Burns songs by John McIntosh.
Their conductor, Jurij Maruk, was born in 1961 in Barnaul, West Siberia. In 1976 he began to study music and conducting at the local music facility in Barnaul. After finishing musical school he was admitted to the Novosibirsk State Conservatory (1980-1985) in Professor Boris Pevsner's class. At this time he worked with the Chamber Choir (Novosibirsk) directed by Pervsner, who was working in close cooperation with the Wladimir Minin Choir in Moscow. Between 1987 and 1989, Jurij Maruk worked at the Mariinsky Theatre (opera and ballet) in St Petersburg as a choir singer. Here he had his initial experience as a conductor and artistic leader of the Mariinsky Theatre (sacred music). Between 1990 and 1992, Maruk worked as the choirmaster of the St Petersburg Radio and Television Choir.
