PURPOSE & ORGANIZATION

MISSION

The University of New Mexico Alumni Relations Office and Alumni Association are the means for the University to communicate regularly with and serve alumni, and for alumni to communicate regularly with and serve the University. The intent of this partnership is to insure the continued excellence of the University of New Mexico.

BACKGROUND

With this mission in mind, the University of New Mexico Alumni Association Board of Directors in 1992 re-established the process of setting goals for the future of the Association. Initially, the process was one of information gathering. To do this effectively, the Executive Committee turned to several sources. First, board members were polled, and their opinions were solicited to establish a direction for goal setting. Next, committee members turned to the Market Survey commissioned by the Board in 1991. Information and opinions were sought from chapter leaders. Finally, the Executive Committee embarked on a series of interviews with campus leaders, from President Peck and members of his staff, all vice president, several deans, and faculty representative to student leaders. With all this information, some of it repetitious and some of it conflicting, the Executive Committee compiled the following major goads. These goals are meant to set direction only. While some may be controversial, all reflect a love of the University of New Mexico. The major finding was the overwhelming importance of alumni to the University. The direction and influence of the Alumni Association are of major interest to all facets of the UNM community.

We have come to believe that the greatest opportunity for the support and growth of the University lies solidly in the area of alumni development. To build upon the base of alumni support and strengthen the future in the alumni relations area is the most visionary option for the University in terms of service and support.

A1

GOAL 1: TO FOSTER AND CONTINUE A SENSE OF PRIDE IN THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO

Impact Statement: Pride in the University of New Mexico, its history, and its present achievements underlie every endeavor of the Alumni Association. It is the source of alumni support and the goal of alumni efforts.

This pride includes an acceptance and appreciation for the multicultural diversity of the student body, staff faculty, and alumni of the University, an inherent part of the culture of our community. For alumni, this acceptance was an integral part of the unique experience of attending the University of New Mexico. An appreciation can be enhanced by recognizing our diversity publicly in a positive affirmation of the differences that bind us.

Finally, the importance of a strong alumni presence in the minds of University students cannot be over-stated. Students who enjoy a positive UNM experience, whether it is academic, in student activities, sports, or a combination, seek out a strong alumni experience later in life. Often, the efforts of alumni can enhance university life for students, thus adding value to the alumni presence in the future of UNM.

Objectives:

  • To create greater positive awareness of the University of New Mexico and the Alumni Association.
  • To encourage individual alumni to visibly share their pride in having attended the University.
  • To recognize outstanding individual contributions to the University community.
  • To continue to develop and support friend-raising activities which promote and create pride in the University, its programs, and its people.
  • To continue efforts to recognize our multicultural diversity in the Mirage magazine (as the official publication of the Alumni Association), in the selection of our Alumni Association Board positions, and via alumni awards.
  • To strengthen efforts to promote a positive university experience by continuing student recognition programs though awards and scholarships, sponsoring various student organizations, and making non-traditional students aware of the Alumni Association through evening and alternative programming.

ACTION PLAN:

  • To continue to provide, through Homecoming and reunion activities, an opportunity for alumni to celebrate the history and vision of the University of New Mexico.
  • To continue broad support for athletic endeavors as a visible source of pride for the University.
  • To expand the Alumni Association’s awards program through local chapters to recognize outstanding alumni communities.

A2

  • To continue support of leadership opportunities for students as an investment in the future of the Alumni Association through sponsorship of Trailblazers, Student Lettermen, and campus activities.
  • To expand Senior Open House to include mid-year graduation ceremonies.

GOAL 2: TO FACILITATE COMMUNICATION AMONG ALUMNI REPRESENTATIVES OF THE UNIVERSITY, AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC

Impact Statement: UNM Alumni are joined with the University in a partnership whose common enterprise and cause is education. As in the past, and perhaps to an even greater degree today, UNM requires the understanding, support, and careful care that can only come from those outside who make or influence decisions that affect it. One of the roles of the Alumni Association is to see that as many individuals as possible know and care about what education really is and what it means for our society and its citizens.

Alumni especially have a great desire for knowledge about their alma mater. In return, a strong alumni voice can have a positive influence on future students, support for the University, and educational goals. To this end, communication becomes all-important as we seek to improve the flow of information among alumni, UNM agencies, and the larger community.

Objectives:

  • To increase the flow of information to alumni through existing channels, including Mirage, chapter newsletters, and Alumni Association mailings.
  • To utilize campus publications to inform staff and faculty about the Alumni Association.
  • To use alumni as public spokespersons for the University whenever possible.
  • To facilitate interaction between alumni and faculty to strengthen the bond to the University.
  • To develop a more formal relationship between the Alumni Association Board and the UNM Foundation Board.
  • To inform alumni about the educational and research accomplishments of the University.
  • To research and articulate alumni opinions about the University.
  • To continue to increase the accuracy of the alumni database.

ACTION PLAN:

  • To continue to increase communication with existing chapters.
  • To identify new sources of volunteers and organizers in local communities through questionnaires sent to target cities.
  • To determine areas of interest to alumni and update mailing lists in the Albuquerque area.
  • To develop ties with Continuing Education, Elderhostel, and other University programs to expand opportunities for alumni continuing education.
  • To improve publicity for the Alumni Association’s awards program.
  • To continue to distribute Mirage/Howler widely as the University’ most positive source of communication to alumni and the entire University community.
  • To continue to recruit corporate sponsors for Mirage/Howler.
  • To seek ways to expand Mirage/Howler to include a fourth issue annually.

A3

  • To establish ongoing interaction with the UNM Foundation Board of Directors.
  • To enhance visibility of the Association within the University community.
  • To create a database with enough diversity, accuracy and flexibility that it will be the exclusive depository for Alumni/Development information campus-wide.

GOAL 3: TO INCREASE OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALUMNI TO SUPPORT, SERVE, AND USE POSITIVE INFLUENCE ON BEHALF OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO AND TO SERVE RELATED ALUMNI NEEDS.

Impact Statement: As representatives of their alma mater, alumni are a concerned constituency who act as guardians of the heritage and achievements of the University. They are a natural source of support and service to the institution. The kind of real support our University requires and the public confidence for which we strive depends to a large degree upon the extent to which our alumni are involved in programs of substance, and in service that leads to productive ends.

Many alumni wish to participate more actively in the life of the University. For this constituency, it is important for the Alumni Association and the Alumni Relations Office to offer opportunities for fellowship and life-long learning. While enjoying these opportunities, alumni develop long-term commitments important to sustaining the efforts of the University.

Finally, alumni have a natural and vested interest in the continuing quality of the University. The goals of alumni and those of the University coincide in their expressed desires for educational excellence, meaningful research, and financial stability. Alumni can use their influence in a positive way to promote the attainment of these goals.

Objectives:

  • To encourage alumni to expand their service to the University.
  • To be a voice for UNM’s strengths, concerns and needs.
  • In concert with the University, to enhance participation and alumni support of legislative efforts on behalf of the University.
  • To maintain the financial stability of the Alumni Association.
  • To further develop New Mexico chapters through programs and opportunities uniquely available to them.
  • To develop and strengthen out-of-state chapter and international program opportunities as sufficient numbers, interest, and funds are available.
  • To involve alumni in reunion activities that showcases the University in all its aspects.
  • To involve alumni in the institutions effort to recruit and enroll quality students.
  • To encourage alumni to express positive support for UNM within their communities and with potential students.
  • To strengthen alumni efforts in the area of career mentorships for students.
  • To continue to support University academic and athletic endeavors as a way to develop pride and recognition.
  • To encourage New Mexico alumni to communicate with local legislators and to include those representatives in activities related to or recognizing UNM.
  • To provide opportunities for life-long learning through alumni access to University facilities, Mirage/Howler articles, and through the development of the Alumni College.
  • To maintain and improve auxiliary programs which offer beneficial services to alumni.

A4

ACTION PLAN:

  • To develop an infrastructure for positive communication to and from alumni who are active in local endeavors related to UNM.
  • To provide a program of information and training to alumni who are interested in influencing legislation affecting the University.
  • To develop a nationwide network of alumni volunteers to assist in student recruitment.
  • To develop a training program in conjunction with the Office of Admissions and Student Outreach Services for alumni to assist in student recruitment.
  • To expand opportunities for alumni to foster lifelong learning.
  • To establish increased opportunities for continuing education beyond the boundaries of UNM's campus.
  • To research the feasibility of developing and maintaining a professional guidance program database.
  • To seek a Service to provide career assistance to UNM alumni through a career networking program.
  • To establish a firm financial base and seek ways of increasing Alumni Association resources.
