MSD 1 Fall 16 Semester

Mike Muldoon’s Three Week Plan

Team 17551 “Sandia Instrumented 3D Printer”

What do I plan on doing to ensure that Team 17551 has a successful week 7(phase 2) System Level Design Review?

Class Specific:

  1. Complete required work before class and be prepared for all in class activities.
  2. Participate in class and group activities and team meetings.
  3. Create a functional decomposition; generate multiple system concepts using a morphological table and concept selection methods.
  4. Work with the group towards having a successful design review.
  5. Participate in the system level design phase and help prepare the required work for this phase.
  6. Participate in the system design review scheduled for week 7.

Project Specific:

  1. Continue with printer benchmarking to help make an educated recommendation for printer purchase.
  2. Research some of the print materials to determine their typical print temperatures and environmental concerns.
  3. Start to experiment with the 3D print software to get used to the user interface prior to receiving the printer.
  4. Aid in expanding the 3D printer decision matrix and completing it by the week 7 system design review.
  5. Aid in generating different concepts to accomplish our project goals and select acceptable concepts to carry into the preliminary detailed design phase.

What did I actually do in phase 2?

Class Specific:

  1. I successfully completed all required work and participated in all class and team building activities.
  2. Applied the functional decomposition methods, the concept generation and selection techniques and completed a morphological table.
  3. Effectively worked with the team in keeping edge updated to have a successful design review.
  4. Aided in preparing the required work for the system design phase. I completed the morphological table and used this to generate four different concepts. I ranked the four concepts to select which concepts to pursue further in the next phase.
  5. Will actively participate in the in class design review in week 7.

Project Specific:

  1. Continued doing research on the printers and have a printer recommendation.
  2. Did research on the printer materials and determined PLA is most common and can be printed at lower temperatures.
  3. Downloaded the 3D print software and have done a little experimenting with it but I should do more experimenting in the next week or two to be prepared for when the printer arrives.
  4. Helped created the printer selection criteria and the decision matrix.
  5. Created the Morph table and generated and selected concepts.
  6. Obtained the 3D CAD model of the printer we plan to purchase. This will help when we start to mount sensors on the printer.

What did I learn in Phase 2?

  1. I learned through feasibility analysis that we will likely be printing smaller parts due to the print speed.
  2. The print resolution is important but highly affects the print time and we will likely choose a lower resolution for our early builds.
  3. The benchmarking process was valuable in selecting a printer but it also lead us to some valuable information and files that will be useful in the future of the project.

What do I plan on doing to ensure that Team 17551 has a successful week 11 Preliminary Detailed Design Review?

Class Specific:

  1. Complete required work before class and be prepared for all in class activities.
  2. Participate in class and group activities and team meetings.
  3. Go through the subsystem, detailed design and component selection process.
  4. Work with the group towards having a successful preliminary detailed design review.
  5. Participate in the preliminary system design phase and help prepare the required work for the review.

Project Specific:

  1. Receive the printer and learn how to use it by printing some basic parts.
  2. Once familiar with the printer start to change some of the parameters and see what causes certain failures and what parameters are most crucial to creating a good print.
  3. Tensile test, impact test and inspect the dimensions of some of the printed parts if possible. (Being optimistic but this may be more of a week 15 goal)
  4. Help with sensor research and benchmarking.
  5. Begin to determine where the best place is to place sensors and work on solutions to mount them to the printer.
  6. Do a thermal analysis of the heated bed to determine where the largest gradients could be to determine where to place sensors.
  7. Do research on how to perform the required testing for the parts. Determine if there is a CMM machine that we can use to measure the geometry of these parts. Also look into the best way to tensile test the 3D”benchie” part we plan on printing.
