Objectives

Global geography is the study of the relationships between the natural and physical environment and how people live on the planet Earth.

In this course, you will use the discipline of geography to investigate global patterns in ecosystems, weather and climate, population, and resources and urbanization. You will often build on skills from previous social studies courses by interpreting and utilizing geographic information. Using a variety of media tools, we will develop and build on a variety of skills including mapping, statistical analysis.

The course comprises five major units, though they may not necessarily follow this order:

The Global Geographer Resources and Commodities

The Planet Earth Urbanization

Population

Evaluation

Your final grade in this course will be determined as follows:

Assignments 35% Tests/Quizzes 25%

Seminar Project 15% Exam 25%

Third term grades will reflect only the work done in that term, and will not necessarily follow these proportions.

Quizzes are sometimes “open notebook”. You must take good notes to succeed!

Seminar is an independent presentation of a subject from the curriculum. You will be expected to teach your classmates a lesson on your seminar topic.

Positive contributions in class include:

·  showing respect for classmates and the teacher

I expect all students to:

·  enter and leave the only when necessary and with permission, without disrupting others

·  complete up to 30 minutes of homework nightly, though this may not always be the case

·  submit all assignments in a timely fashion

Materials You Will Need

Binder or folder for your notes Loose leaf

Pencil, eraser, pen, and ruler Duo-tang/Scribbler/Hilroy

Absences & Missed WorkIf you are absent for any class assessment (in-class assignment, quiz, test or other work), you must have a reasonable excuse with a phone call or note from a guardian or doctor or you will receive a mark of zero.

When you miss a class, I expect that you will collect handouts, copy notes from a classmate, and complete any class work within three days. It is YOUR responsibility to seek help if you cannot complete missed work.

Assignments are due at the beginning of class on the due date. Late material will continue to be accepted ONLY until the last teaching day of the unit, when answer keys for assignments are posted online.

According to SSRSB policy, teachers are not responsible to prepare homework packages for students on extended holidays. If you take a vacation during the school year, you will be responsible for collecting your missed work when you return, unless prior arrangements have been made personally with me.

Academic Dishonesty

Academic dishonesty is any attempt to present the work of another person as your own. Any research must include proper citations for all reference materials, and you will present that information in your own words, as a demonstration of your current knowledge and understanding.

Cheating is not limited to tests, but can occur any time a student receives credit (grades) for any learning activity. As a guideline, you should consider that if you submit material for a grade with your name on it, I expect that you have done that work independently. (It represents your own understanding and you did not require a tutor or any other person to do that work.)

If you are unable to complete an assignment, you may be given extra time if you demonstrate responsibility and get in touch with me before the deadline.
