JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: CLINICAL PRACTICE FACILITATOR –
MATERNITY SERVICES
GRADE / SALARY: Band 8A
ANNUAL LEAVE: 27 days rising to 29 days after 5 years NHS service and 33 days after 10 years NHS service
SUPERANNUATION: 6% of salary (optional)

PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNTABLE TO: Head of Midwifery
MANAGERIAL ACCOUNTABLE TO: Divisional Manager for Women and Children Directorate
1. JOB SUMMARY
· Be responsible for personal and professional development of all staff and learners within the Maternity Department.
· Facilitate practice learning to the highest quality through teaching, assessing, administration and practice-based work whilst supporting the Trust’s Clinical Governance Agenda.
· Work in close collaboration with external agencies (Pan London clinical facilitators), with the clinical and organisational multidisciplinary team of the Trust and link with Higher Education Institutions to influence educational strategy.
· Working with senior midwifery team and multidisciplinary Team in taking forward and shaping the future of midwifery practice in the light of the local, national and professional agenda.
· Play a pivotal role in education provision within the Maternity department The Facilitator will be a proficient, approachable role model in addition to an expert clinician in the field of Midwifery, with a proven tract record of clinical achievement.
· Areas within the Maternity department include: Labour Ward Murray Ward Cearns Ward Cearns Link Maternity Day Unit Antenatal Clinic and the Community Base to provide clinical support
2. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
2. 1 Education and Training
2.1.1 In conjunction with the Head of Midwifery, Consultant Midwife, senior midwifery team and Supervisors of Midwives, produce a training needs analysis for the maternity Department
2.1.2 Co-ordinate, facilitate and manage in-service education programmes for
midwives, maternity care assistants and junior doctors including
Mandatory training on medical devices.
2.1.3 Maintain good communication and liaison with Middlesex University ducationalists ensuring their involvement with the in-service education programme
2.1.4 Undertake teaching on in-service programmes as required
2.1.4 Participate in student midwives, medical students and postgraduate
medical training as appropriate, for example OSCE.
2.1.5 Ensure in-service training programmes are made accessible to all
midwifery staff, this will require liaison and negotiation with team leaders
and midwifery managers
2.1.6 Undertake such training as required to maintain and update own
professional development, knowledge and registration requirements
2.1.7 Proactively develop in-service education programmes to meet the
changing needs of the service and clinical practice
2.1.8 Be innovative in approach to teaching methods and learning
experiences
2.1.9 Liaise with the Assistant Director of Nursing for education to monitor and evaluate the use of the education contract for maternity services.
2.10 Provide verbal and written feedback on usage of educational issues and practice to Head of Midwifery and Senior Midwifery team on a regular basis
2.11 Prepare and give Multidisciplinary lectures in line with current evidence based practice
2.12. Develop and run multidisciplinary teaching programmes for obstetric emergencies in line with CNST requirements.
2.13 Set up and run training databases for midwives, doctors and health care assistants
2.14 Produce reports from training databases for the trust
2.2. Midwifery practice development
2.2.1 Co-ordinate and teach midwives to develop their clinical skills and competencies in IV Cannulation, Suturing, IV drug administration, theatre techniques, waterbirth, obstetric skills and drills.
2.2.2 In conjunction with the Head of Midwifery, Consultant Midwife, senior midwifery team and Supervisors of Midwives identify the practice development needs of midwives and develop educational programmes or learning experiences to facilitate midwifery practice development
2.2.3 With the senior midwifery team, take a proactive approach to the development of the maternity workforce, undertaking or/facilitating relevant training programmes to develop their skills or staff.
2.2.4 Attend regional clinical practice development meetings in sharing and bringing back new clinical development practices to Whittington Hospital
2.2.5 Work in clinical areas supporting and training midwives in practice, promoting and developing midwifery skills to facilitate normal birth
2.3. Guidelines and policies
2.3.1 Take the lead within maternity for co-ordinating and facilitating the development of guidelines and policies. Chair the policy and guideline group
2.3.2 In conjunction with the multi-professional team identify policies and guidelines which need development, review or updating, ensuring that policies and guidelines reflect evidence based/best practice
2.3.3 Liaise with the relevant departments to publish departmental policy and guidelines folders, including maintaining policies/guidelines on the Trust Intranet
2.3.4 Ensure all staff made aware of new guidelines and policies. Undertake dissemination/launch events as required
2.3.5 Advise on the implications of national standards/guidance/ recommendations for practice and service development, for example NICE guidance, CEMD and CESDI reports, NSFs. Develop action plans for implementation, involving the multi-professional team.
2.4. Audit and Effectiveness
2.4.1 In conjunction with the Lead Consultant Obstetrician, Consultant Midwife, Senior Midwifery team and Supervisors of Midwives identify and co-ordinate midwifery audit activities, encouraging midwives to undertake audit projects to meet practice and service needs
2.4.2 Participate in the Maternity unit audit committee and ensure midwives participate in multi-professional audit
2.4.3 Co-ordinate the implementation of action plans resulting from audit
2.4.4 Participate in presenting maternal clinical audit at perinatal meetings
2.5. Clinical Governance
2.5.1 Working with the multi-disciplinary team, liasing and co-ordinate clinical governance activities within the maternity service to promote a positive clinical governance culture to continually improve the quality of care within the service
2.5.2 Co-ordinate, write and edit the publication of the maternity newsletter bimonthly
2.5.3 Participate in clinical governance activities within the Trust and lead on specific delegated projects for the maternity service
2.5.4 In conjunction with the Head of Midwifery, Consultant Midwife, Senior Midwifery team and medical staff further develop the clinical governance framework within maternity service
2.6. Management Responsibilities
2.6.1 Deputise Clinical Midwifery Managers in their absence, to co-ordinate and
manage the day to day running of the maternity unit
2.6.2 Manage databases for all in service training within the maternity services.
2.6.3 Manage projects to improve maternity services
2.6.4 Manage training programmes and placements for NHS midwives from outside the trust
2.6.5 Manage all induction and orientation programmes for all midwives and health care assistants

3.4 No Smoking
The Hospital has promoted a No Smoking Policy as part of its responsibility for the provision of health. You will be required to work within the framework of this policy. Smoking is not permitted in offices.

3.7 Method of Payment
Payment of salary is made into bank account/building society account by direct bank system. Details of a bank account or building society account will be required on the first day at work. There is no facility for any form of payment.
