Grading & Policies
Physical Education is based primarily on participation and satisfactory achievement & demonstration of the California Physical Education Content Standards. Grades are based on points earned. Points are earned through both quizzes/tests and daily participation. Full credit is earned when students are dressed in the CCHS PE uniform, on time, and participate with 100% effort. Students who choose to put their PE uniform over their regular street clothes will be marked as a non-dress. In order to participate, you MUST be dressed for safety and hygiene reasons. If you dress and do not participate you receive a zero for that day. On run days, students earn points based on the number of laps required within a given time period.
Attendance
Students are not excused from participation points when they are absent. It is the student’s responsibility to ask for makeup work for excused absences, where an alternative assignment may be given.
Doctor’s Notes
Doctor’s notes are to be submitted to the nurse prior to class. Students are still required to dress daily with a doctor’s note. Alternative assignments, which could include written assignments, will be regularly assigned when students are not able to participate physically. This will count as participation points for that particular day.
Grading Scale
90 % - 100% = A
80 % - 89.9 % = B
70 % - 79.9 % = C
60 % - 69.9 % = D
↓ 60 % = FAIL
Grading:
75% of grade is based on points from participation
25% of grade is based on points from quizzes/tests/run tests/homework/written assignments
PE Lockers
All students are assigned their own PE locker. Sharing of lockers in NOT allowed. “The District is not responsible for lost or stolen items, including those in lockers” (Parent-Student Handbook). Do not bring or leave items of value in your PE locker such as electronics, money, books, etc. We are NOT responsible for these items.
Electronic devices are NOT allowed in class unless it relates to the curriculum and students’ have prior teacher permission. Confiscated instruments will be turned into the Deans’ Office.
State Mandated Fitness Testing
High school students must pass the physical performance test administered in grade nine to receive the temporary two-year exemption under EC 51241(b) that allows districts to exempt students from physical education any two years in grades ten, eleven, or twelve. State statute defines “passing” as meeting satisfactorily (scoring in the Healthy Fitness Zone) at least 5 of the 6 standards of the current physical performance test, the FITNESSGRAM®. Information on the statewide physical performance test is available online at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/pf/.
We prepare the student in all areas of the test: flexibility, muscular strength, muscular endurance, body composition, and cardiovascular endurance. They are expected to practice the activities at home as well as in class. ***Practicing these activities (push-ups, sit-ups, stretching) at home is our daily homework assignment. FITNESSGRAM® testing begins in February.
Our goal is for all our students to become active, healthy adults. We hope that we provide our students with the opportunity to find an activity that they enjoy and will continue throughout their life.
