Cadet Classroom/Standard OperatingProcedures (SOP)

  1. Entering/Exiting classroom- Cadets will be assigned seating for the classroom. Once you have been assigned a seat, you will not change it without the SMI’s approval.
  1. Cadets will enter the classroom, phones will be off and stowed away, and you will place your books/backpack under or to the side of your desk. You will retrieve your class notebook and put it on your desk.
  1. Cadets will remain standing, at ease until their name is called for role by either a senior or staff officer.Cadets will respond “Here Sir/Ma’am” and then take your seat.
  1. If the warm-up is on the screen, you will begin writing it in your notebook. The notebook will also be used for any and all other notes taken in class and will be the foundation for quizzes and exams during the year. Cadet Notebooks: cadet notebooks are the property of the JROTC unit. All writing in a cadet notebook will be CADET WRITING only. Cadets will only write in their notebooks when directed, and only what material is directed by the instructors.
  1. Instructors/Adults entering the classroom: any time an instructor or other adult enters the classroom, the command “Attention on Deck” will be given by the first student noticing the instructor/adult. Cadets will remain at the position of attention until given the command “at ease” or “take your seats” at which time you may sit down.
  1. Talking/Requesting to speak in class- Students will raise their hand when needing to speak and will only speak when directed to by an instructor, or other presenter in the classroom. If you need to speak to another student for some reason, you will request to do so through the instructor.
  1. Instructor Spaces: only seniors are authorized access to the instructor office unless specifically directed by the SMI/MI to enter. Senior use of the instructor office is a privilege, and may be revoked upon violation of its use.
  1. SMI/MI Desk Area: cadets will not touch anything on or around the instructor’s desk area unless specifically authorized. This includes cabinets, admin tables or any other items belonging to the unit or the SMI/MI.
  1. Out of uniform (dress)-all cadets are expected to be in uniform on uniform day unless otherwise instructed. If you are out of uniform, you will still be expected to stand in formation at inspection and answer questions for the knowledge portion of the inspection. You will also be graded on other aspects of the inspection such as bearing, drill, ect.
  1. The PT uniform- all cadets are expected to be in the appropriate PT uniform on designated days (unit PT shirt, green shorts, athletic socks and shoes. No wearing of boxer shorts, tank-tops or other non-athletic equipment will be allowed. No wearing of jewelry of any type will be allowed in the PT uniform.
  1. Absent on Uniform Day-if you are absent on uniform day, you will wear the cadet uniform the next day that you attend school. If you are not in uniform, you will have a second day to make it up. Your grade will start at a 75 for missing uniform inspection the first time, and 50 for missing it the second time.
  1. Absent regular classroom/drill day-if you are absent on a regular classroom day/drill day, you will notify the instructor of that immediately upon returning to school. The instructor will then brief you on what materials/lessons/paperwork you need to make up.
  1. Missing/Lost paperwork-if you are missing or have lost paperwork, you will immediately notify the instructor who will discuss the appropriate consequences.
  1. Cadet Notes from a Parent/Guardian: any and all notes turned in to an instructor will have a working phone number on them.
  1. Haircut/Shave (personal grooming): all males will be clean shavenfor uniform inspection. No mustaches or other facial hair is allowed in uniform.
  1. Uniform Exchange- if a cadet has a damaged uniform or a uniform that no longer fits, they will bring the uniform item to the instructor on Mondays and Tuesdays only. You will inform the instructor of the issue with the uniform and it will be replaced. If the uniform is damaged because of negligence, the student will be required to pay for the damaged uniform. If you have lost a uniform item, you will inform the instructor who will then replace it when the item has been paid for.
  1. Uniform Turn-in- all uniforms will be turned in clean. Dirty uniforms will not be accepted. This does not mean they have to be taken to the cleaners, but simply need to be washed in the washing machine (the exception is the dress blue uniforms—they will be dry cleaned only).
  1. Missing Ribbon/Insignia/Rank- all cadet ranks/ribbons and insignia will be updated and replacedat the end of each semester. Broken or missing rank and insignia will be done each Monday and Tuesday.
  1. TTO- if you are becoming weak, or dizzy while performing drill or exercise, you will raise your right hand and request a Training Time Out. An instructor will then gauge your ability to continue at that point.
  1. Head calls- students will not normally be allowed to exit the class for a head call. This is to be taken care of on your time between classes. Only seniors are allowed to use the head in the instructor’s office.
  1. Food/Drink in the classroom: there will be no food, drink or gum in the classroom other than water unless authorized by an instructor.
  1. Dismissing class- cadets will not move from their seats or start packing backpacks, etc. unless directed by your platoon commander/platoon sergeant/guide. The SMI or the senior cadet present will dismiss class by calling “Attention on Deck” and then “Dismissed”.
  1. The Lucky Box- all items of value (watches, wallets, money, jewelry) will be placed in the Lucky Box as needed (PT days, uniform inspections, etc). They will be returned by the instructor upon completion of the event.
