5th Grade 1st 6 Weeks Lesson plans
Exemplar Lesson 01: Classifying Matter Using Magnetism, Electricity, and Conductivity (11 days)
In this lesson the students will conduct activities that will give them a better understanding of using magnetism, electricity, and conductivity to classify matter.
Exemplar Lesson 02: Mixtures and Solutions (7 days)
The physical properties of matter will continue to be investigated in how substances interact in mixtures and solutions. Students will demonstrate that mixtures can be separated and identify mixtures that are in solution.
Exemplar Lesson 03: Constant properties of Matter (7 days)
Students will identify that the constant nature of substances may be expressed in properties such as their melting and boiling points. In this lesson, students will investigate density, melting points, boiling points, and freezing points.
6th Grade 1st 6 Weeks Lesson Plans
Exemplar Lesson 01: Properties Matter (10 days)
The properties of a substance are those characteristics that are used to identify or describe it. Physical and chemical properties are used to classify matter. Physical properties refer to the state of matter. Chemical properties change the chemical nature of matter.
Exemplar Lesson 02: Chemical Changes Create Change in Matter (4 days)
This lesson addresses the chemical changes matter can undergo. The chemical and physical properties of a substance change when the substance undergoes a chemical change. Chemical changes are caused as a result of chemical reactions. The change results from a rearrangement of the atoms. After a chemical reaction, the properties of the new substances differ from the original substances.
Exemplar Lesson 01: Relationship between Force and Motion (10 days)
This lesson contains several activities that allow the student to graph and interpret graphs in group situations. Students will be required to test and describe how forces are related to motion and describe what happens to the motion of an object as it accelerates. They must also create, interpret and analyze changes in motion that are represented graphically.
7th Grade 1st 6 Weeks Lesson Plans
Exemplar Lesson 01: Sunny Synthesis (5 days)
This lesson introduces students to the process of photosynthesis. The students are to identify the parts of plants that are involved in photosynthesis as well as the products and reactants involved. The energy transfer involved in radiant energy from the Sun being converted to chemical energy is introduced. Photosynthesis is revisited in two other units.
Exemplar Lesson 02: Seedling Science (5 days)
The purpose of this lesson is to look at the forces and tropisms at work on the growth of plants. This lesson consists of two lab activities that require the growing of plants.
Exemplar Lesson 01: Energy Flow (6 days)
This lesson focuses on food chains, webs, and the transfer of energy in a system. The 10% rule and the role of the Sun in maintaining life on Earth is also addressed.
Exemplar Lesson 02: Ecosystems (6 days)
Students will engage in research and application of knowledge of biotic and abiotic factors of various ecosystems. Students will also interpret animal and plant adaptations needed for survival.
Exemplar Lesson 03: Succession and Equilibrium (3 days)
Students will be observing, describing, and identifying primary and secondary succession in ecosystems and the role succession plays in maintaining equilibrium in ecosystems.
