JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Research Associate

UCL Department: UCL Interaction Centre

Grade: 7

Hours: Full Time

Salary: Grade 7 (up to spine point 33), currently £33,686 - £37,524 inclusive of London Allowance

Reports to: Professor Ann Blandford.

Main Purpose

Applications are invited for the post of Post-doctoral Research Associate in the UCL Interaction Centre, UCL, to work under the supervision of Prof. Ann Blandford on the interdisciplinary i-sense HIV Online Pathway (iSHOP) project.

Novel HIV diagnostic tests combined with advances in digital health provide new opportunities for people to self-sample, self-test, receive a diagnosis and be managed online without accessing traditional health care services. Early qualitative evaluation of user views suggests that HIV self-testing could have considerable public health gain by increasing access to testing to those at high risk and reducing barriers to testing in some of the estimated 25,000 people in England who are HIV positive but unaware of their diagnosis. However, the ways in which HIV self-testing should be offered, to whom and how are undeveloped. The aim of this project is to develop and test an online care pathway for HIV that links in to relevant NHS services.

The role is to lead on user interaction design, implementation and testing: Identifying user requirements for the web-based app which will be composed of an online results service and clinical care pathway; iterative design, piloting and revision of the app; and “in the wild” testing with a small group of users. The focus is on the design and evaluation of the user interaction: other aspects of implementation will be addressed by other team members.

The position is based at the UCL Interaction Centre. UCL Interaction Centre (UCLIC: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/uclic) is a Centre of Excellence in Human-Computer Interaction drawing its members from both Computer Science Departments and the Division of Psychology and Language Sciences.

The post-holder will join a world-leading team of researchers from UCL working on the iSHOP project. The post-holder will be a member of the i-sense IRC (https://www.i-sense.org.uk/) and the UCL Institute of Digital Health (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/digital-health) and work closely with colleagues in the Research Department of Infection and Population Health.

Duties and Responsibilities

To undertake user requirements gathering, design, prototyping and testing of the proposed app.

To work with team members on full system implementation.

To prepare and present findings of this research activity to colleagues for review purposes.

To contribute to the drafting and submitting of papers to appropriate peer reviewed journals. To contribute to the overall activities of the research team and department as required. To contribute to the teaching duties of the Research Department.

As duties and responsibilities change, the job description will be reviewed and amended in consultation with the post-holder.

The post-holder will carry out any other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as requested by the line manager or Head of Department/Division.

The post-holder will actively follow UCL policies including Equal Opportunities and Race Equality policies.

The post-holder will maintain an awareness and observation of Fire and Health & Safety Regulations.
