CHSPInnovative Teaching Award

During the Bicentennial Campaign, this monetary award was made possible through several CHHS/CHSP donors who place value on the ability of faculty to stimulate, engage, challenge, and mentor students at any level in the educational process.This monetary award of $1,000 will be given to the award recipient. (The award is made directly to the recipient via payroll.)

Eligibility

All full-time faculty in the College of Health Sciences and Professions are eligible to receive this award. A recipient may not receive the award in consecutive years.

Period of consideration

Most recent evaluation period, i.e., January through December consistent with the Annual Faculty Performance Evaluation (AFPE).

Nomination

After reviewing all relevant and pertinent materials from the most recent evaluation period (i.e., January through December of the prior calendar year), each chair/director may nominate one person from among the department/school’s full-time faculty members. In addition, a faculty member may nominate a colleague, and a faculty member may self-nominate.

•February 23, 2018: Applicant submits complete set of materials

•April 20, 2018: CHSP Awards Ceremony.

Basic requirements of application:

Format: one-inch margins, 11-point, Arial font.

Length: Proposal not to exceedseven(7) pages. Appendices are separate and have no page limit.

Page 1: Cover page.

Page 2: Statement of support from chair/school director. The statement from the chair/director should describe how the teaching innovation fits the school and college missions.

Page 3: Letter of recommendation from a peer. The letter from apeer should emphasize how the innovation is relevant to the profession or discipline in which the applicant teaches.

Pages 4-7: Explanation/justification/teaching philosophy (maximum 4 pages); separate your narrative into four parts as described below).

  1. Description: Why is your product or method innovative? Describe how the student outcome supports/demonstrates your innovation. (Attach actual evidence of the product in an appendix),
  2. Rationale/justification: Why did you choose to do this innovation? Explain how you came up with this innovative idea.For example, were you inspired by student feedback, a workshop you attended, or conversations with colleagues?
  3. Teaching philosophy: How does this innovation relate to your overall teaching philosophy or how does it impact/change your teaching philosophy?
  4. Next step in this innovation: Where will you go from here? What is your plan for future development of your innovation?

Appendix (required, but not counted in page limit)

In an appendix, the nominee will provide evidence of innovative teaching implemented during the prior calendar year.Examples of evidence include: (a) the outcome or result of your innovative teaching; (b) student work product;(c) student feedback on learning experiences or skills acquired;and/or (d) the results of a novel course evaluation method.

NOTE

With permission of the nominees fortheInnovative Teaching Award nominees, submissions might be published on the college website and highlighted in Skylights in order to share the innovation with the rest of the college and inspire others to develop innovative teaching approaches.

Review Committee

The CHSP Teaching, Learning and Assessment (TLA)Committee willserve as the selection committee. In the event that one of the committee members is a nominee, a substitute committee member will be obtained from that department/school.The TLA Committee will review the award submissions, select the recipient, and advise the CHSP Dean of its selection. If the Teaching/Learning Committee does not reach a consensus, it will forward the names of potential recipients to the Dean, who will make the final decision.
