More Than Words Can Say
To be sure of a pleasant visit to a foreign country, it is not enough for visitors to just learn a few basic phrases in the local language. It is important to get a basic understanding of the body language used there, too. Why? Many visitors find themselves getting into trouble when they arrive in a foreign land. They think body language is something that is the same around the world. Sadly, they are wrong.
To many travelers’ surprise, the gestures that they use in their home countries can mean something different in a foreign land. In the U.S.A., for example, people make a fist with a thumb up to say, “Good job!” or “That’s right!” However, in Iran and some South American countries, this very gesture means, “I don’t respect (尊重) you.” If you go to a Middle Eastern country, make sure you keep your feet firmly on the floor because it is rude to show the bottoms of your feet to others. When in Indonesia, do not use your left hand to give something to someone; the left hand is considered unclean there.
So, the saying “When in Rome, do as the Romans do” is as true today as it was in earlier times. If you know what body language to use—or not to use—you will fit in more easily and avoid making a fool of yourself in a foreign land.
