NAVA JEEVANA PARENTS ASSOCIATION FOR MENTALLY CHALLENGED

Project Name & Location

Shelter based program support and rehabilitation of youths with Learning Disabilities of Parents Association

Organizational Profile

Nava Jeevana Parents association for mentally Challenged (Registered) is the group of parents of learning disability youths, who were trained in APD, for the last 3 years with medical intervention, basic socializing skill and vocational training skill. After that the children have nothing further to engage meaningfully. As, in most cases they lead an isolated, idle life without any sense of direction or purpose. Some of them perish young without realizing their abilities. Therefore to address comprehensive rehabilitation of these children and facilitate them to eventually pursue a career and livelihood, we have started a sheltered based program to support these youth with income generation activity. This will enable the youths, engage meaningfully and start to produce minimum income to meet their needs partially.

Situational Analysis:

As per available statistics about 4 to 10 % people in India are affected by various types of disabilities. This includes 2- 3% people with Learning Disabilities which is not a disease but a permanent disability caused due to improper care/medication during pregnancy, nervous problem (epilepsy) / accidents during and after birth. Such factors leave severe impact on the person concerned as well as the family members. Learning Disability can be associated with autism, cerebral palsy, genetic disorders (down syndrome), The affected person becomes an unavoidable burden to the family. Inadequate support system and lack of comprehensive rehabilitation leads to social isolation and the family trauma.

There are three categories:

  • Mild – Affected person can independently perform routine physical functions but is a slow learner.
  • Moderate – Affected person is partially dependent and has slight behavior problem
  • Severe – Affected person is totally dependent on family members for all activities with severe behavioral problem. It’s a greater challenge for the family and the society to manage such persons.

Need for the Program

Currently most Hospitals / Special Schools cater only to medical intervention and basic socializing skill. After that the children have nothing further to pursue and they return as burdens to their parents.
