Brief Description

Responsible to the Sports Development Unit on the Jordanstown Campus, the Rugby Development Assistant will work closely with the Rugby Development Officer on a combined work programme in association with the Sports Development Unit, Sport and Recreation Service and the Sports Union.

They will assist in the day-to-day delivery of Rugby activities and programmes for students, staff and external users of the University’s sports facilities. They will also work closely with University Rugby clubs in the development of participation and performance levels, structures, programmes and marketing activities.

Key Responsibilities
  1. To assist with the work of the Rugby Development Officer as defined within the University of Ulster Strategy for Sport in conjunction with the Sports Development Unit.
  1. Promote the University and its Rugby Strategy through work with partner agencies including local schools.
  1. To assist the Rugby Development Officer with the development, promotion and management of Rugby camps, courses and events.
  1. The development, promotion and management of a ‘Try, Learn, Play’ Rugby Programme delivered to students, staff and external users on the Jordanstown campus.
  1. To assist with the development and delivery of a coach and volunteer recruitment, education and training programme for the Jordanstown Campus.
  1. To assist with the advertising and marketing of performance sport programmes including the Elite Athlete Entry Scheme and Sports Scholarships.
  1. To assist with the organisation and management of promotional events including Open Days, Freshers Fayre and press launches.
  1. To assist with the coaching / instruction of individuals, clubs and classes as appropriate. This will specifically include, UUJ RFC, UUJ Under 20’s, UUJ Ladies and the general student population including participation and performance initiatives.
  1. The collection, collation and management of information statistics and reports as appropriate. To include video analysis, match reports, information for the UU Rugby and Ulster Rugby websites and updating UU Sports Union memberships.
  1. Liaise with local press and University Public Affairs staff to publicise Rugby at the University of Ulster
  1. To work closely with the staff and members of the UU Sports Union, acting as a point of contact for the UUJ Rugby Clubs and the Sports Development Unit.
  1. The promotion and implementation of good practice in all areas of work including health and safety and risk assessments.
  1. Act as the UUJ representative within the Irish Colleges Rugby Union.
  1. To aid the development of the UUJ Rugby Committee and assist with administrative duties, fund raising and sponsorship.
  1. Any other duties allocated which are appropriate to the level and nature of the post.

Academic Background
Required / It is essential that the appointee has successfully completed 2 years of a degree course at the University of Ulster in a relevant subject area.
It is essential the Rugby Development Assistant is, at least, an Accredited IRFU Foundation Level Rugby Coach or will be by 8th October 2007.
Other desirable elements include:
Holding a recognised strength and conditioning or fitness qualification
Knowledge of local and national Rugby development programmes
Personal Skills
& Competencies / Appointee must have:
Excellent communication & interpersonal skills
The ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative
Enthusiasm for Rugby and the ability to inspire/encourage others to get involved
Computer literacy including working knowledge of Word, Power-point & databases
Other desirable elements include:
Experience of working/volunteering in a sports environment
Experience in marketing / PR activities
Other factors / Appointee must have:
Access to own transport
A full driving licence
Flexibility to work outside normal office hours
Willingness to sit the Students Union Mini Bus Test
