Position Summary:

  1. Serve as a peer leader and student staff person as part of the Chancellor’s Associates Scholars Program.
  2. Serve as a peer mentor for CASP students
  3. Attend necessary trainings and staff meetings.
  4. Complete the Mentor Practicum during the 2016 Fall quarter (if you haven’t already done so)
  5. Work study preferred, but not required.

Position Compensation:

$375 per quarter = $1,500 per academic year

CHANCELLOR’S ASSOCIATES SCHOLARS PROGRAM (CASP) INFO

WHAT IS CASP?

In 2013, Chancellor Pradeep Khosla created a new undergraduate scholarship program, the Chancellor’s Associates Scholars, to recognize and support local, high-achieving, and talented students who:

Have been admitted to UC San Diego

Are California residents

Have demonstrated financial need and family incomes of $80,000 or less

The Chancellor’s Associates Scholarship Program (CASP) was created to accompany the scholarship and to support admitted scholars throughout their time at UC San Diego. The program represents UC San Diego's full commitment to support and develop scholars through graduation; it provides a wide range of services and opportunities to ensure that they thrive as UC San Diego undergraduate students, and are fully engaged in academics, student life, and university experiences.

THE SCHOLARSHIP

Freshmen: $10,000 per year, up to 4 years

Transfers: $10,000 per year, up to 2 years

CASP PEER LEADER (CPL) JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Description:

The CASP Peer Leaders (CPLs) will work with a caseload of 8-10Chancellor’s Associates Scholars (CASP) students providing support and counseling related to academic, personal, and sociocultural issues affecting their college transition. The role of the CPL is to foster a welcoming, safe, and inclusive community among entering students and to encourage student development and identity awareness through peer mentoring meetings.

It is the expectation that the CPL will perform the following:

For their assigned Students:

Conduct hour long one-to-one meetings (at least two per quarter for transfers, and one for freshman) with assigned students

Assist in record keeping to document the progress of students (evaluations, academic progress checks)

Maintain files on students (contact information, one-to-one meeting summaries)

Organize group activities for assigned students

Complete necessary contact forms for each individual student session

For the program:

Complete the CASP Mentor Practicum during the Fall 2016 quarter (if you have not already taken it)

CASP Mentor Practicum Schedule – Fall Quarter 2016, Weeks 1 – 6, Thursdays 12:30 – 2:30 p.m.

ALL CPLs MUST ENROLL AND COMPLETE THE PRACTICUM DURING THE 2016 FALL QUARTER

Attend quarterly group meetings for the Winter and Spring quarter

Schedule a quarterly 1:1 meeting with the Academic Support Coordinator

Update office files for students (financial aid, housing, academic major, students of concern)

About 10 office hours per quarter

The position requires the ability to work sensitively, tactfully, and patiently with multicultural and diverse populations. CASP Peer Leaders (CPLs) must demonstrate active listening skills and reflect a genuine attitude of caring for others. Must be aware of and able to recognize and respond to students in need of additional assistance; provide appropriate referrals to University resources. Must provide appropriate consultation and referral to supervisors when appropriate while maintaining student confidentiality. Maintain confidentiality about student caseload, only disclosing information when appropriate to the Academic Support Coordinator(not to other student staff).

Additionally the CPLs will assist the Academic Support Coordinator in designing and implementing comprehensive program events and evaluation. PMs must attend all mandatory student staff meetings, trainings, one-to-one meetings, and follow up consultation meetings for students of concern. Assist in the in recruitment, selection and training of new CPLs for the subsequent year.

Payroll Title:Student Peer Counselor (title code: 4938)

Salary: $375 per quarter

Position to begin first day of the Fall 2016 quarter and end the last day of the Spring 2017 quarter.

Qualifications:

  1. Knowledge of Student Affairs and broader UCSD department and college resources (including, but not limited to CAPS, SARC, Student Legal Services, Financial Aid, Admissions) in order to provide successful referrals to students.
  2. Must be dependable and meet CPL performance requirements as outlined in expectations above. Show commitment to own personal growth and identity development. Must be able to budget time to manage the demands of the job alongside being students and active participants of the UCSD and broader community.
  3. Have an understanding of the mission of the Chancellor’s Associates Scholars Program and the needs of the CASP students (
  4. Strong organizational and exceptional communication skills.
  5. As part of the reference check process, verification of completion of EDS 116, or a similar peer mentor training – ie: RA training, Orientation Leader, Student Health Advocate, OASIS Mentor Practicum, TCLI, is mandatory.

  • Optional – 2017 Freshman & Transfer Induction Ceremonies (Dates TBA)

There will be various opportunities for optional additional PAID hours at a rate of student assistant III ($10/hour).
