ESSENTIAL UNIT 6 (E06)
(Add and Subtract Fractions with Unlike Denominators)
(July 2013)
Unit Statement:In this unit, the student will demonstrate the ability to estimate the sums and differences of fractions and mixed numbers, as well as rewrite fractions and mixed numbers so that they have common denominators. In addition, the student will demonstrate the ability to perform subtraction of fractions and mixed numbers by renaming when needed. In order to be successful in this unit, the student is expected to be familiar with the Key Terms and Concepts listed below.
Essential Outcomes:(must be assessed for mastery)
Problem solving and higher order thinking components are essential for‘A’ level mastery. Each TSW can contain problem solving and higher order thinking components (as found in suggested text).
- TheStudentWill apply unit skills and concepts to real world application problems.
- TSWmake reasonable estimates of fraction sums and differences. (6.3 pp. 251-254)
- TSWfind a common denominator or a least common denominator to write equivalent fractions. (6.4 pp. 255-258)
- TSW use equivalent fractions to add and subtract fractions. (6.5 pp. 259-262)
- TSW add and subtract mixed numbers with unlike denominators. (6.6 pp. 265-268)
- TSWrename to find the difference of two mixed numbers. (6.7 pp. 269-272)
- TSWidentify, describe, and create numeric patterns with fractions. (6.8 pp. 273-276)
- TSWadd fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators using the properties of addition. (6.10 pp. 281-284)
Introduced and Practiced Outcomes:(taught not assessed)
- The Student Will use models to add fractions with unlike denominators. (6.1 pp. 243-246)
- TSW use models to subtract fractions with unlike denominators. (6.2 pp. 247-250)
- TSW solve problems using the strategy work backward. (6.9 pp. 277-280)
