Ten Haaf Projects is pleased to announce “Master of Disaster”, a solo show by Inna Levinson. While the artist works in many media (film, drawing and sculpture), this show will concentrate on her latest body of work: reliefs made with colourful plasticine clay. A key motif that often leads Levinson in her work is that of desire. Desire can drive people to great things, but it can also cause destruction.
The works displayed present Levinson’s version of classical scenes in European art. Taking already existing classical images, the artist creates her own world. Her work shows scenes of people gathering around in celebration, but also of war and suffering. Mythological figures and her interpretations of religious tales are also depicted on these reliefs made of clay.
For instance, “Der Sieg of das Tittenmunster” depicts Levinson’s version of “The Liberation of Andromeda” by Piero di Cosimo from 1510. A giant monster with many breasts has been slayed, while people are gathered around. The original is about freeing the beautiful princess, whereas Levinson’s version is about the battle between the sexes.
Constructed behind used glass window frames, the works give an impression of religious icons. Through the humour that is evident in all her reliefs, even war scenes are more of comedy than suffering.
Currently living and working in Berlin, Levinson was born in the Ukraine in 1984 and graduated from the UDK Berlin in 2014. With some of her work in private collections, Levinson has shown in group and solo exhibitions in Germany, The Netherlands, Japan, and at the Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art.
Ten Haaf Projects gallery is still under construction. “Master of Disaster” will be shown in a temporary location at Elandsstraat 44, 1016 SG Amsterdam.
