Top Academic Awards for Year 13 Students at Marsden.
The highest academic award in the school is Dux. The Proxime Accessit is runner up to the Dux. Other awards given to students with outstanding academic results are:
the Alice Bowater Memorial Award; the School Bursar Award (up to 3 awards); the Old Girls’ Association Leavers’ award (up to 2 awards); the Science /Maths and Arts cup.
Apart from the Science / Maths and Arts Cups, these awards are made based on student performance across a range of subjects.
How awards are determined:
NCEA
Students’ results in their Level 3 internal assessment and exam practice external assessment are given a numerical value and aggregated and weighted, according to number of credits each standard is worth. This generates a ranked list for each subject. The rankings in the top 20 per cent of each subject is then used to determine which students have performed most strongly across a range of subjects. Initially the best five subjects will count.
Eg Student A is 3rd= in English, 1st in Chemistry; 4th in Bio; 1st in Painting and has no top 20 per cent ranking in German.
Student B is 8th= in Statistics; 1st in Physics; 8th in English; no top 20% ranking in Chemistry; 2nd in Geography.
Student A has a better overall ranking than student B.
Please note: Combined Mathematics will generate rankings for both Calculus and Statistics separately. It will count as two subjects. Students will be ranked with the other students taking those subjects individually.
Scholarship
To be considered for one of the top academic awards (as listed above), students need to have completed at least one practice Scholarship exam paper (or the folio and visual diary/ report required for practical subjects)
That result will be taken into account following the ranking of students based on their NCEA results.
Other factors which will be taken into consideration:
If a student studied a Level 3 subject in the previous year, her ranking and results may be included if they are part of a student’s ‘top five’. Practice Cambridge results may also be taken into account.
