ENTRY FOR INDIVIDUAL LANGUAGE ABILITY SECTION

A school may enter up to a maximum of 3 students for the Individual Language Ability section, with 1 student in each category.

Students entering the Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced categories:

·  must be non-native speaking learners of Mandarin Chinese;

·  may not have previously been the winner (or the runner-up awarded the prize if the winner could not take it) in any category of the Individual Language Ability section;

·  may not have a native Chinese* speaking parent or be from a Chinese* speaking household; (*any Chinese language/dialect)

·  may not have spent more than a total of two years in a country where Chinese* is an official language. (*any Chinese language/dialect)

·  may not have spent more than a total of 30 days in a Chinese* speaking country per year since beginning their Mandarin studies; (*any Chinese language/ dialect).

·  Students who come from countries surrounding China or who have parentage from countries where an Asian language is spoken will need to demonstrate that they are a complete beginner in Mandarin and have not spent more than a total of two years in China or in any neighbouring countries where Mandarin is an official language.

Beginner category (for students who started learning Mandarin Chinese on or after 1 September 2016 and please note that students with GCSE-level Chinese or equivalent are not eligible for this category irrespective of the starting date)

ENTRY FOR GROUP PERFORMANCE SECTION

There must be between five and six students from the same school or college in a group, with students coming from at least two different year groups.

Students in the Group Performance section:

·  must be non-native speaking learners of Mandarin Chinese;

·  may not have previously been the winner (or runner-up awarded the prize if the winner could not take it) in any category of the Individual Language Ability section or the Group Performance section;

·  may not have a native Chinese* speaking parent or be from a Chinese* speaking household; (*any Chinese languag/dialect)

·  may not have lived in a country where Mandarin Chinese is an official language (*any Chinese language/dialect).

·  There must be five or six students from the same school or college in a group, with students coming from at least two different individual language ability categories.

·  The use of English in the performance either sung or spoken is not permitted.

·  Teachers must not be involved in the performance and no prompts or scripts are allowed

·  All students must perform equally within the group performance and the results from the Judges will reflect this “Cohesion” (for further information see the Judging Criteria).

The British Council will treat all personal information in accordance with UK law and its own privacy policy. The British Council will not sell or disclose your details to third parties for commercial reasons. Your information will be shared at this stage only with individuals administering the event.
