Job Description

Job Title:Student Assistant

Department:The Carver Resource Center

Reports To:Director

FLSA Status:Non-Exempt

SUMMARY

Assists guests (i.e., all authorized users and visitors) of the Center in the use of center equipment and resources. Interacts with guests in the use of equipment and curriculum materials checkout system. Trains individuals and small groups of guests in the use of selected equipment and materials. Overall, must consistently demonstrate dependability and a people-oriented demeanor.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

Other duties may be assigned.

Helps guests to use computers, related peripherals, copy machines, and other equipment.

Assists guests in locating desired equipment, printed materials, online information and other resources available in or through the Center.

Helps students to perform basic computer-based tasks necessary to use Center resources, including, but not limited to, access of the Internet, and establishing required UT email and online accounts.

Facilitates checkout and return of equipment and materials using the checkout system.

Inspects equipment for damage and/or missing components.

Opens and closes the Center when scheduled to do so, following established procedures for equipment operation and security

Informs fellow workers and the Director of any breach or potential breach in security or safety.

Assists in the design, production, and dissemination of materials in various media.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no formal supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

The student assistant must be a currently registered student at The University of Toledo.

TECHNICAL SKILLS

Ability to use and clearly explain to others use of the following: disk operating systems and file management procedures for both Apple Macintosh and Windows computing platforms; basic productivity applications, including the Microsoft Office suite for both platforms; and use of selected peripheral equipment, such as printers, scanners, cameras, and storage devices.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and equipment manuals. Ability to write routine reports, correspondence and procedures. Ability to communicate effectively with individuals and small groups.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense and logic to carry out instructions and solve problems. Ability to invent and apply creative and appropriate solutions to solve unusual problems.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk. The employee must have normal or near normal visual acuity. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to approximately 50 pounds. Electronic equipment in the Center may cause harm if not handled properly. The employee may be required to use computers for extended periods, and must take proper precautions to prevent eyestrain and other physical trauma due to the use of electronic equipment. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
