Academy on Social and Solidarity Economy – South-South Elective Session Plan

South-South and Triangular Cooperation: Regional, Sub-Regional networking experiences for social innovation in SSE policies
(English, French and Portuguese)
Learning Objectives:
The participants will be able to:
a) Learn about regional and inter-regional initiatives and their implications for SSTC
b) Share Good practices on South-South Cooperation and Social Innovation in SSE
c) Build a network on SSTC and Solidarity Economy
By virtue of the principles of solidarity and non-conditionality, South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) is regarded as a SSE compatible approach for sharing knowledge, experience and good practices and for supporting capacity development, technology transfer and even resource mobilization or the formation of international chains and networks of social innovation. The ILO has been engaged in initiatives that have evidenced the complementarity between SSTC and SSE in the past few years, these activities have been showcased in the SSE Academies in Agadir (2013) and Campinas (2014) and now Johannesburg (South Africa). South-South and triangular arrangements can expand the impact of Social Economy in national contexts by building regional and inter-regional networks and platforms for knowledge and experience-sharing. There are already many SSE networks between countries from the South, for example the Latin American Coordination Bureau of Fair Trade (MCLACJ), MERCOSUR Solidario, ASEC network in Asia, RIPESS, just to name a few.
As for Africa, Many networks specific to a certain type of SSE Organizations have been established. For instance, the ILO built a partnership with the African Social Entrepreneurs Network (ASEN) for the purpose of facilitating the exchange of ideas on good practice initiatives that will further develop the social entrepreneurial space in Africa. As a direct follow-up to the Johannesburg Conference, 14 African social economy networks met in Mehdia, Morocco, in October 2010 to create a regional network on the SSE (i.e. Réseau Africain de l’Économie Sociale et Solidaire). The regional network is part of the Intercontinental Network for the Promotion of Social and Solidarity Economy (RIPESS). RIPESS Africa is represented here and will share some of its good experiences.
Considering those facts, the session on Regional, Sub-Regional networking experiences for social innovation in SSE policies in the framework of a South – South and Triangular cooperation is conceived as a space to share good practices on SSC and Social innovation in SSE and build network on SSTC and Solidarity Economy. The objective will be three-fold: sharing knowledge, exchanging good practices and creating a strong network of practitioners that combine the SSE work with a South-South and triangular cooperation methodology.
