Guidelines for Pre-AP Chemistry
H. Cannon 2013-2014
Parents and students, please read these guidelines carefully. After completely reading this as well as the safety guidelines, please go to my website and complete the parent acknowledgement form. Students will be quizzed over this information in class.
Supplies needed:
- bound composition book for lab notebook
- writing implement in class daily
- calculator in class daily
Class information
- all class notes and assignments are available on class website or Blackboard
- textbook will be available online
- 6 weeks calendar will be posted on website
Grading guidelines
- testing days are Wednesday and Friday
- major grades count for 60% of the overall 6 weeks grade
- labs will be an integral part of the curriculum and will account for a significant portion of the grade - 20%
- quizzes comprise 15% of the grade; some will be announced, some will not.
- the remaining 5% of the grade will be daily classwork and homework grades
- 2nd chance testing will be an option on major grades by concept. For each concept failed, remedial work will be assigned and that concept may be retested. The ew grade on the concept will be averaged with the original grade to recover up to 70% of the points lost on that concept.
Success in chemistry can be found by following some simple rules:
- designate an average of 30 minutes per day to studying chemistry
- take advantage of opportunities to ask questions and get help
- morning tutorials each day at 6:45 a.m. and after school on Wednesdays
- phone a friend
- use your online textbook
- turn in all assigned work
- assignments are due at the beginning of the period on the due date
- late work will be corrected but may not always be graded for full credit
- when absent, it is YOUR responsibility to complete missed assignments:
If you are absent on the day of a test or quiz, come to school the following
day prepared to take it
If you are absent on the day before a previously announced test or quiz,
come to school prepared to take it - ONLY if new material was covered
on the day of the absence will you be excused from the assessment - prepare for class each and every day
Thanks and I hope we all have a great school year!!
