Annual Goals and Benchmarks
Year 1: In spring 2005, 44% of the 8th graders will meet proficiency in reading and will earn an average of 49% in the 5 writing dimensions in the H.S.A.
Year 2: In spring 2006, 44% of the 8th graders will meet proficiency in reading and will earn an average of 53% in the 5 writing dimensions in the H.S.A.
Year 3: In spring 2007, 44% of the 8th graders will meet proficiency in reading and will earn an average of 57% in the 5 writing dimensions in the H.S.A. / Rationale: Academic achievement is addressed in the GLOs. WIS adopted America’s Choice (AC) as its Comprehensive Reform Model to address literacy, along with 4 out of the 5 elementary feeder schools. The 5th elem. school adopted Direct Instruction. In spring 2004, 16% of the 8th graders “Met Proficiency” in reading and earned an average of 41% in the 5 writing dimensions of the HSA. Three percent of the 7th graders “Achieved the Overall Standard” in reading and 4% AOS in writing in the NSRE. In spring 2005, WIS learned it would begin restructuring in SY 2005-’06.

The ability to achieve academically and apply problem solving and critical thinking skills are GLOs for all students at Waianae Intermediate. The math department believes that students need to focus on mathematical concepts and problem solving. In 2001-2002, WIS adopted the Connected Mathematics Program to help students meet the HSA mathematics goals. In spring 2004, 5% of the 8th graders Met Proficiency on the HSA (Mathematics), and 1% of the 7th graders AOS on the NSRE (Mathematics).

Continue the Connected Mathematics Program (CMP) at Waianae Intermediate.
Follow the Restructuring Plan developed by the NCEE as mandated by NCLB. / All Core Team math teachers will use CMP in their math classes starting SY 2002-2003.
Use H.S.A and the Restructuring Plan assessments to target students approaching standards.
Invite students and their parents to the evening AC Orienta- tion Meeting where CMP is part of the agenda. / All math teachers attend CMP Study Goups and math department meetings to analyze student work and update curriculum maps. The math dept will revisit and refine the imple- mentation of CMP using the Workshop Model.
