CONTINUING EDUCATION DEFINITIONS AND THE CONTINUING EDUCATION CHARGE
Purpose of This Document
In FY13, ASU is pursuing a renewed focus on continuing education (CE). Led by ASU Online and Extended Campus, this effort is intended to increase the visibility and expand the scale and scope of continuing education offerings across ASU. A new central website will launch in January 2013 to list CE courses, registration will be integrated in Spring 2013, and by Summer 2013 the site will be an online course delivery platform.
Overall Definition of Continuing Education for Programmatic Reporting:
Continuing education activities comprise all delivery of educational offerings by the university for which no university credit is granted. Typically, these offerings are provided to adult students for a fee.
Definition for Purposes of Assessing 10% Charge:
The Provost’s Office will charge 10% of registration/tuition revenue collected for such activities.
What Continuing Education Activities are Included in the 10% Charge:
· Workshops, courses, seminars, conferences, etc. whose primary purpose is continuing education or professional development, and for which a participant registration fee is charged. Example: Pipers Writer Studio (http://www.asu.edu/piper/workshops/)
· Executive education for U.S. or foreign public or private entities. Example: CLAS training Kazan Federal University (Russia) faculty on nanotech innovation
What is Excluded from the 10% Charge:
· K-12 outreach activities such as the summer programs for middle school students. Example: IAFSE’s Best program (http://engineering.asu.edu/summerprograms/best/index.html)
· Student success activities such as bridge programs for incoming ASU students. Example: Summer Design Primer (http://communityschool.asu.edu/design/summer.php)
· Event management/pass through activities such as events organized on behalf of professional organizations. Example: Academy of Continuing Education’s work with the American Heart Association. (https://nursingandhealth.asu.edu/lrc/life-support?destination=node/3774)
Accounting transactions for the 10% charge:
The 10% charge will be automatically assessed on all revenue posted to:
· 5540.01-Continuing Education Registration Fees
· 5299.01-Student Fees – Continuing Education Registration Fees. This code is used exclusively for ASU On-Line American English and Cultures Programs.
When establishing a new event subject to the 10% Continuing Education Charge through Reg- On-Line, Nelnet or the On-Line Payment Portal, please request that the registration fees be posted to one of the revenue codes listed above. Also if depositing checks for events subject to the Continuing Education Charge one of the revenue codes listed above should be used.
The 10% Continuing Education Charge will post weekly to departmental accounts. The charge will be coded to expenditure code 7900.04.
