FURTHER PARTICULARS
The Governing Body of Lincoln College invites applications for this Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in Music, tenable for a fixed term of three years from August 1st2017, or as soon as possible thereafter. The person appointed will be expected to undertake advanced research in any field of Music and may be asked to provide a limited amountof undergraduate tuition. He or she will also take an active role in the musical life of the College. At the time of application, applicants should not have accumulated more than six years of full-time post-graduate study or research and may not previously have held a stipendiary Junior Research Fellowship at another College.
Lincoln College
Lincoln is one of the oldest Oxford Colleges with fine historic buildings located in the centre of the City of Oxford. It has a strong sense of collegiality with a reputation for integrating its graduate and undergraduate students in a highly successful traditional community. There are currently 50 Fellows, of whom 29 are also College Tutors responsible for teaching and the welfare of students. About 95 undergraduates and 120 graduates are admitted to Lincoln each year covering a wide range of disciplines, and around 600 students are in residence at any one time. In recent years the College figuresregularly in the top ten ranking of all Colleges for academic performance in Final Examinations. Further information about the College can be obtained from
This Fellowship, together with a large number of college scholarships and bursaries, is supported from the will of Nathaniel, Lord Crewe (1633-1721), 18th Rector of Lincoln College, Bishop successively of Oxford and of Durham, which is administered by a separate trtust based in Durham (Lord Crewe’s Charity). The Lord Crewe JRFs are expected to make an annual report to the Trustees and to make a vist to Durham during their tenure of the Fellowship.
Research
The Fellow will be required to carry out an approved programme of research in any field of musicology, musical analysis, performance, composition or other appropriate area.
Teaching
Junior Research Fellows are encouraged to develop their teaching skills. The Lord Crewe Fellow will be expected to provide up to three hours of teaching per week for the College, averaged over the 24 weeks of the academic year. Payment for such teaching will be at the standard rates recommended by the Senior Tutors’ Committee. Lincoln College admits 2-3 students per year to read Music. The Tutor for Music is Professor Suzanne Aspden, Fellow of Jesus College, and students of Lincoln and Jesus Colleges frequently work together in tutorials and classes. The Lord Crewe Fellow will be available to teach in areas appropriate to his or her expertise, under the guidance of Professor Aspden.
Opportunities to participate in teaching within the Music Faculty might become available from time to time and, provided these do not encroach upon the Fellow’s research, or College duties, may be taken up. Such teaching would be paid separately by the Faculty.
Further information on the undergraduate Music course may be found here:
The Fellow may also be invited to act as an advisor, but not as a supervisor, for any graduate students in College reading for higher degrees in Music. Additional payment will be made for this.
The Fellow will be expected to be available in Oxford during full term but may, with permission, be absent from Oxford for short periods during term in order to conduct necessary research and/or take part in performance.
College Music
Lincoln has a strong musical tradition, in both sacred and secular music, and the Fellow will be expected to make a significant contribution to the musical life of the College. In particular, the Fellow will assist the Chaplain and the Organ Scholars in the development of music in Chapel. The Lincoln Chapel Choir is widely recognised as one of the finest mixed-voice choirs in Oxford, drawing its membership, by audition, from across the University ( A new Drake organ was installed in the chapel during 2010. There are normally two undergraduate Organ Scholars in residence at any one time, although from time to time the College may appoint a graduate organ scholar (Precentor) to cover a vacancy. The College supports5Choral Scholarships and 2 Choral Exhibitions, which may be awarded to graduate or undergraduate students. The Organ Scholars are responsible to the Chaplain for the choir, which they oversee and direct, and for all the music in Chapel. The repertoire is wide-ranging, and they are encouraged to develop their own interests. The Lord Crewe Fellow will be a source of advice and support to the Scholars, and will be expected to assist the Music Tutor and Chaplain in the selection process for Organ and Choral Scholars, but he or she will not be expected to act as a Director of Music. There is a lively student-run music society in College which arranges performances in other musical traditions. The Crewe Fellow will have an important role in overseeing and encouraging the work of this society
