Report on Forge Creek Stage 2 Surveys – John Hutchison
BirdLife East Gippslandiscontracted by the Gippsland Plains Catchment Management Network (GPCMN) to undertake bird surveys at two sites within the Forge Creek Water Reserve. The first year of the two years surveys has now been completed with four seasonal surveys completed at both sites on 7/11/13 (spring), 18/02/14 (summer), 18/04/14 (autumn) and 5/08/14 (winter).
The surveys are based on one 2 hectare plot at each site. Site 1 is located adjacent to the Fox property and Site 2 off Barkhill Road where it crosses Forge Creek. Bird species, both heard and seen, arerecorded within the 2 hectare sites and also separately recorded outside within about 100m of the boundaries. The number of birds was also estimated/counted and recorded for each species both within and outside of the 2 hectare sites.
One year’s data, four surveys, is too small a sample size to undertake much analysis. It may show some seasonal change such as an increase in both species and numbers of birds over spring and summer, due in large part to seasonal (summer) migrants, but it will not show trends due to changing seasonal conditions or changes in the quality of habitat unless of course there was a sudden and large habitat change, for example a fire.
The sites are both 2 hectares and the time to complete the surveys is deliberately restricted to 20 minutes per site. The number and skill level of birders conducting the surveys and selected weather conditions are the same for both stages.
Site 1 has a greater density of trees and understory shrubs and plants compared with Site 2, which is dominated by large mature Coast Grey-box (aka Gippsland Grey-box, E Bosistoana) and is more open with less under story.
The survey data in the following two tables reflects the habitat difference between the sites with a greater diversity of species and number of birds at Site 1. Also the data is smoother at Site 1, i.e. the data is less variable or erratic from one survey to the next.

The Site 1 combined data, within site and outside of site, (see following table) is very similar to the Redgum Woodland Site in previous surveys on Forge Creek, where a total of 52 species and 299 birds were recorded in the 2013 survey. While the dominant tree species are different at the two sites, redgums and stringybarks, the structure and complexity of the habitat is similar.

No Noisy Miner colonies were detected at either Site 1 or Site 2 with only one bird recorded within Site 1 during one survey and five birds outside of Site 2 during one survey (highlighted yellow in the tables below). The absence of Noisy Miners is reflected in the good number of woodland birds species, especially the small insectivores, recorded at both Sites 1 and 2.
Introduced bird species were rare at both sites with only a few Common Blackbirds and Common Starlings recorded on a few occasions -a further reflection of the good quality habitat in the Forge Creek Water Reserve.
Some species of interest encountered during the surveys included:
Australian Owlet-nightjar: While this species is widespread across Australia and fairly common, being nocturnal, they are not often found. It was a pleasant surprise to flush one at Site 1 during the Spring survey. This is another tree hollow dependent species, both for daytime roosting and nesting.
NOTE: as no night surveys were conducted the chance of detecting owls during the daytime surveys was very low. The Forge Creek Water Reserve is almost certainly used by Southern Boobook and Barn Owls and possibly Powerful Owls from time to time. Also Tawny Frogmouths would be resident in the Reserve.
White-winged Triller: This is a well-known and conspicuous spring/summer migrant to SE Australia. Their numbers in Gippsland increase when widespread drought prevails inland. The woodland at Site 2 was alive with breeding Trillers during spring and early summer 2013.
White-browed Woodswallow: This very striking woodswallow is a nomadic species, though they tend to go north in autumn and south in spring. Their appearance in East Gippsland is erratic and often coincides with inland droughts pushing birds towards better conditions near the coast. There were good numbers in the Site 2 woodland during spring when some were found on nests.
Site 2 was selected to include a section of water hole on Forge Creek, the creek is a good example of a “chain of ponds” watercourse, hence Australian Wood Duck, Chestnut Teal and Pacific Black Duck have been recorded at Site 2.
The bird data recorded for the first year of the Stage 2 surveys together with the Stage 1 survey data will provide a valuable inventory which can be used to monitor the health of the Forge Creek Water Reserve over time.
The second year data will help validate the first year surveys and will no doubt expand the species inventory.
