Expectations and Values

We will cultivate a positive and supportive learning environment for every student. You are expected to participate, provide mutual support and respect for all peers and teachers, stay on task(be mindful) and actively work in class, act responsibly with supplies and privileges, work respectfully in a team, be honest, and be willing to accept constructive criticism. Because of the creative nature of art, it is essential to cultivate a belief that you can do it (and you can!). Absolutely no “I cant’s, no put-downs, nor making fun of others will be tolerated. Take pride in your work. Do not rush when doing assignments I will give you extra time if I see you need it.

This class is for you!

If you have art interests, obsessions or just want to experiment with a type of art or subject of art please find a way to mesh it into what we are doing in class. That being said, it is good to try new types of art and try art that is out of your comfort zone.

Art Book Inspiration Assignment

Due every A-day Friday

Assignment: Skim/read an art or illustrated book from your own library or from my library. It must be a physical book with pages. This can be done with extra time in class or at home. Miss Stewart’s books can be checked out and taken home for a week at a time. If you check out one of my books they need to be treated with care.

In your sketch book use your creative interpretation to include the following information …

  • Art Book title? Book Author/editor?
  • A Half page nicely hand written in your sketchbook. What did you learn from the book? Brief synopsis of what book was about.
  • Make a work of art in your sketchbook inspired by the book you read(since this is a sculpture class you may build a 3D work of art as well)

INKTOBER!!

October will be our INKTOBER month. Jake Parker created inktober. This is what he says about it. “I created InkTober in 2009 as a challenge to improve my inking skills and develop positive drawing habits. It has since grown into a worldwide endeavor with thousands of artists taking on the challenge every year. Anyone can do InkTober, just pick up a pen and start drawing.” –Jake Parker I feel like even though he only draws this is applicable to all forms of art. If you do it every day you will improve. Because this is a sculpture class instead of drawing for inktoberwe will have an assignment that applies to sculpture. You will choose an object and alter that object every day of October and photograph that object. I will explain more criteria as October gets closer.

Some rules in art class

No phone policy

No phones will be permitted in the art classroom. Leave phones in your locker. If I see them they will be taken away and given to the office. If you need reference images for artworks you can print out pictures before class or use books. If you have an old school mp3, Walkman, disk player, portable record player or music player without internet, games or smartphone capabilities you can listen to music during time when you are working on class assignments.

Choice

The power to make good decisions.

If you choose to not do a classroom assignment that is ok but by not doing an assignment you will be missing out on many potential learning experiences that will help you grow in your life. If you choose to sit out a project you will be expected to not disrupt the class or bother other students.

If you are disrupting the class, teasing others, not acting like a respectful human being you will be asked to leave class and work on an alternative assignment. Please do not interrupt learning for those students who wish to learn.
