The Rise of a Trombone Choir
I have been playing Euphonium
with the Silverwood Band for a
couple of years nowalthough I
have played trombone with
them on occasions prior to
this. I have played trombone
for almost half a century, wow I sound old!!! It has always been a wish to play in a trombone choir or a trombone ensemble after hearing a group of six trombones play when I was very young.
Having discussed the possibilities with one of my accomplished students, also a member of the Silverwood, and other players from various bands, I decided to invite a few trombone players for a blow back in April of this year. The first rehearsal was absolutely fantastic, what a sound!! The birth of the ‘T.Sliders’ had occurred.
We have now a very willing and able group of trombone players very keen and eager to play. A mutual decision was made that we would try and get together whenever we could. We come from various bands around the area, but four members of the Silverwood Band myself, Dan Chirnside, Danielle Bartram and Alan Widdrington are all members of this new group.
We have met a total of three times now and our first official performance is going to be at the Stockton Summer Show, held in Preston Park on 25thAugust 2014. There will be four brass bands and the T.Sliders so well worth popping along.

Profiles
This time, we feature the oldest member of the band
Peter Woodcock – Tuba
Peter joined the band in 2009, and he has played with many bands across the area, Lingdale, Marske, South Bank and Osmotherley to name but a few. he did play with the Silverwood Band in the very early days and returned a few times under different conductors playing a range of instruments from Tuba to Trombone and Trumpet.
For the last few years he has been playing Tuba with the band.
Have your say in what we play!!!
Stuart Shields, the band’s music director is always on the look of for new pieces of music, in fact, I think it has come the point where he may actually be a self confessed music freak!!!
The band has over 300 pieces of music in the library and this is added to every year. As a band, we like to please the audience and sincerely hope that the pieces we choose are liked by everyone, although I am sure that a couple of the band members may disagree with this.
If there are any pieces of music that you would like to hear the band play, please feel free to let either Stuart or Anne-Marie know and we will look into this further.
