EconoDrain PT-3™: #8 Trench Drain System Specification Section 02600 Drainage and Containment

Note to Specifier: General guidelines use Division 2 when the trench drain is outside the building structure and Division 15 when inside the structure. Use of Division 3 is utilized on smaller projects.

The following specification is for an eight inch (8”) trench width utilizing a 10” wide grate/cover. These systems are suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications requiring FAA type loading.

Part 1 PRODUCTS

2.01  MANUFACTURERS

B.  Substitutions: Only as allowed and pre-approved prior to bid date.

2.02  MATERIALS

A.  The trench drain system shall be EconoDrain® #8 consisting of non- CFC Expanded Polystyrene Foam (EPS) interlocking pre-sloped removable forms having a minimum slope of 0.5% (1/16” fall per lineal foot of trench) and installed in standard eight foot (8’) sections, pre-welded grate frames anchored securely in concrete, anchor stand-rebar system used for form stability \ grade adjustment \ anti-flotation resistance during concrete pour and standard cast grates having load capacities equaling or exceeding FAA AC150/5320-6D, Part 5, Appendix 3.

B.  Expanded Polystyrene Foam (EPS) [ASTM C-578]

1.  EPS shall be non-CFC foam, Type 1 having a nominal density of 1.0 lbs./cu.ft., flame spread of 25 or less [ASTM E84] and Smoke Developed rating of 450 or less [ASTM E-84].

C.  Grate Frame; [ASTM A-36]

1.  Left and Right Grate Frames shall be affixed together and pre-welded, by MultiDrain Systems, Inc., to assure proper symmetry and planar accuracy, coated Black polyester powder coating, with welded alignment clips.

2.  Eight (8) Anchor Stands shall be provided assuring installation stability; simple grade adjustment and System flotation resistance per eight foot (8’) length. The anchor stands shall be fully welded to the angle frame by MultiDrain Systems, Inc.

3.  The Grate Frame shall be fixtured to accept grate lockdown bolts to be inserted after concreting operations and EPS form removal. Temporary fasteners shall be provided by the manufacturer to secure the threaded insert during system installation.

4.  Each Grate Frame shall provide a means to mechanically lock itself into the surrounding concrete. Rail pull out resistance shall not be less than 5,526 lbs./lineal foot (24.5 kN/ft.).

D.  Grating

1.  Ductile Iron Grating shall be Part Number EG10243DIA, un-coated, 65-45-12 Ductile Iron; [ASTM A-536, 65-45-12] utilizing a three point threaded fastener lockdown per each two (2) foot section of grate and having a minimum open area of 54%. The grate lockdown mechanism shall provide secure fastening thru the grate seat rail.

2.  Grating shall be made in the USA and shall conform to the FHWA’s “Buy America” policy 23 CFR 635.410(b), as amended by enactment of the 1991 ISTEA, if US Federal Aid finances are applicable.

3.  The grating load capability performance shall conform to AASHTO M306-04, H20 and H25 specification.

4.  The grating load capability performance shall conform to FAA AC150/5320-6D, Part 5, Appendix 3.

5.  The grating shall sustain a vertical test load of 200,000 pounds for One (1) minute with the load transferred through a 1” x 9” x 9” steel plate, centered on the casting, without failure or permanent deformation.

6.  The bolts utilized to secure the grate to the frame shall be 5/8” x 1” x ½-13 UNC Socket Shoulder Screw and conform to ASME B18.3-1988.

E.  Catch Basins

1.  8” x 24” x 24” In-Line Catch Basin Assembly consisting of EPS Former, Pre-assembled Grate Rail and grating shall be Part Number ECB824.

2.  (Option) 24” x 24” x 24” Catch Basin Assembly consisting of EPS Former, Pre-assembled Grate Rail and grating shall be Part Number ECB2424.

3.  (Option) 24” x 24” x 36” Catch Basin Assembly consisting of EPS Former, Pre-assembled Grate Rail and grating shall be Part Number ECB2436.

4.  (Option) 24” x 24” x 42” Catch Basin Assembly consisting of EPS Former, Pre-assembled Grate Rail and grating shall be Part Number ECB2442.

Part 2 EXECUTION

2.01 ERECTION

A.  Install EconoDrain PT-3™ in accordance with manufacturer’s “EconoDrain® Installation Instructions”.

1.  All EPS Formers shall be coated with pigmented EconoDrain® Form Release, Part Number RA1G or RA5G, sufficiently ahead of installation to allow the form release to dry.

2.  Provide bracing to assure alignment and stability of formwork during concreting operations.
