Agency Request for

State Building Commission Action

OCTOBER 2010

AGENCY: Department of Natural Resources

PROJECT: Tomah Ranger Station, Project #10J2P

LOCATION: Tomah, Monroe County

Project Request:

Request authority to release $50,000 Building Trust Fund (BTF) to prepare preliminary plans, specifications and a design report to construct a Tomah Ranger Station.

Project Description / JUSTIFICATION:

The Wisconsin Legislature mandated the DOA/DSF through 2009 Wisconsin Act 28 § 9150 (11u) to conduct a third-party facility assessment regarding the feasibility of the shared use of administrative facilities used by the State Traffic Patrol and the Department of Natural Resources in or near the City of Tomah.

Through DSF Project #09I2V, a report was completed (DNR/DOT Agency Sharing Feasibility Study, dated August 17, 2010). The study evaluated maintaining the current facility, upgrading the current facility and constructing a new DNR Ranger Station. As a result of the study, the Department has decided to proceed with a Ranger Station co-located with the DOT State Patrol Post in Tomah.

The project is proposed to construct a co-located DNR program office and support space, a fire control drive-thru vehicle storage and maintenance garage, and unheated storage space. This facility will replace the existing Tomah ranger station.

Previous Action:

In November 2007 the State Building Commission granted the Agency’s request to construct three ranger stations (Tomah Ranger Station in Monroe County, Whiting Ranger Station in Portage County and Prentice Ranger Station in Price County) at an estimated cost of $4,122,700 ($4,030,900 Segregated Conservation Fund Borrowing, 20.866 (2) (tu) and $91,800 Agency Funds-Law Enforcement Boat Storage Funds, 20.370 (3) (ar)) as enumerated in 2007 Wisconsin Act 20.

In March 2007 the State Building Commission recommended the Tomah Ranger Station (Project #07H2K) be included with the Prentice and Whiting Ranger Stations in the 2007-09 Capital Budget.
