CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION

MTH 0003-Basic Mathematics, 3 Credits

A study of the fundamental operations of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, including a study of percents, measurement, and interest. Lecture 3 hours. No laboratory.

WITHDRAWAL, AUDIT, AND INCOMPLETE POLICY

To withdraw from the class, the student should initiate an official withdrawal through the counseling office; non-attendance DOES NOT constitute official withdrawal. The student who neither attends nor drops the class will receive the grade earned based on the work completed. Failure to withdraw may result in the student receiving a regular grade of “F” at the end of the semester. To request a change to Audit “AU”, the student must be maintaining a passing grade. The student must initiate the change with the counseling office. No incomplete grades will be issued for this course. The last day to withdraw or change to audit for this semester is Friday, April 4th, 2008.

Inclement Weather: TCC rarely closes. If extreme weather conditions or emergency

situations arise, TCC always gives cancellation notices to radio and television stations.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY OR MISCONDUCT

Academic dishonest or misconduct is not condoned nor tolerated at campuses within the Tulsa Community College system. Academic dishonesty is behavior in which a deliberately fraudulent misrepresentation is employed is an attempt to gain undeserved intellectual credit, either for oneself or for another. Academic misconduct is behavior that results in intellectual advantage obtained by violating specific standards, but without deliberate intent or use of fraudulent means. TEXT:Prealgebra & Introductory Algebra by Elayn Martin-Gay. SUPPLIES: Paper, pencils (tests are to be done in pencil ONLY), eraser, ruler, 3 ring binder.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: Academic dishonesty (cheating) is defined as the deception of others about one’s own work or about the work of another. Academic dishonesty or misconduct is not condoned or tolerated at campuses within the Tulsa Community College system. Tulsa Community College adopts a policy delegating certain forms of authority for disciplinary action to the faculty. Such disciplinary actions delegated to the faculty include, but are not limited to, the dismissal of disrespectful or disorderly students from classes. In the case of academic dishonesty a faculty member may:

§  Require the student to redo an assignment or test, or require the student to complete a substitute assignment or test;

§  Record a "zero" for the assignment or test in question;

§  Recommend to the student that the student withdraw from the class, or administratively withdraw the student from the class;

§  Record a grade of "F" for the student at the end of the semester. Faculty may request that disciplinary action be taken against a student at the administrative level by submitting such a request to the Dean of Student Services.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the student should be able to:

1.  Perform the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with whole numbers, fractions, mixed numbers, decimals, and signed numbers.

2.  Understand factoring and prime factorization.

3.  Use properties of numbers and the order of operations.

4.  Use fractions, decimals, and percents to represent quantities.

5.  Use ratios, proportions to solve real world problems.

6.  Understand U.S. and Metric Units of Measurement.

7.  Interpret graphs.

8.  Understand and use basic statistical data.

9.  Understand and use appropriate mathematical terminology.

TEACHING METHODS:

Teaching methods will include lectures, in class modeling of mathematical processes, class discussions, and homework assignments. Students are expected to attend class and complete homework.

EVALUATION TECHNIQUES:

Students will earn their grade in this course from the following sources:

Homework Quizzes (50 quizzes worth 5 points each, drop the lowest 5) 225 points

Final 100 points

Total possible points- 735 points

MAKE-UP AND LATE ASSIGNMENTS POLICY:

All assignments must be turned in on the day they are due. Make-up exams will be given in emergency situations only. The student must notify the instructor prior to an exam regarding the need for a make-up exam so necessary arrangements can be made. If the instructor in not notified in advance, no make-up exam will be given.

ATTENDANCE:

Regular class attendance is a must in order to be successful in this course. Students are held responsible for all materials covered during their absence and any changes made in the assignment schedule.

AN EXCESS ABSENCE NOTICE WILL BE ISSUED AFTER A STUDENT ACCUMULATES THE EQUIVALENT OF THREE WEEKS MISSED CLASS PERIODS AND IS NOT MAINTAINING A “C” AVERAGE FOR THE CLASS. WHEN THE EXCESS ABSENCE NOTICE IS ISSUED, THE STUDENT WILL BE CONSIDERED “NOT ATTENDING” CLASS. THE FINANCIAL AID OFFICE AND VETERANS SERVICES WILL BE NOTIFIED IF APPLICABLE. THE STUDENT MAY ALSO BE SUBJECT TO ADMINISTRATIVE WITHDRAWALS FOR NONATTENDANCE.

If a student has serious extenuating circumstances during the semester that affects his/her ability to attend class, the student should make special arrangements with the instructor as soon as the problem is identified.

PLAGIARISM POLICY:

Plagiarism is claiming, indicating, or implying that the ideas, sentences, or words of another writer are your own; it includes having another writer do work claimed as your own, copying the work of another and presenting it as your own, or following the work of another as a guide to ideas and expressions that are then presented as your own. The student should review the relevant sections of the TCC Student Code of Conduct Policy Handbook.
