Volunteering for LTR

Helping the coaches at Learn-to-Row summer camps is a great way to get back on the water and to teach new rowers. At least 4-5 experienced BRC rowers are needed each day to fill the boat and lead by example. Modified, Novice and Varsity are all welcome!

The camps are a valuable source of capital funds ($$ to buy/maintain boats and stuff) and new rowers for Fall season. In 2016:

Session 1 August 1-12 9-11 AM (Session 2, PM Cancelled)

Session 3, 4 Aug 22-Sept 2 9-11 AM and 3:45-5:45 PM

Contact Coach Becca to let her know what days you are available. Get your friends, neighbors and cousins to try your sport and Learn-to-Row! They can register at www.brightoncrew.org!

What to expect:

  • Direct parents/kids to the boathouse (incl. setting up signs)
  • Welcome kids at the house
  • Show everyone the parts of the boat/boathouse
  • Demonstrate the stroke on the erg
  • Help carry boat/launch/oars
  • Help the kids through the stroke on the water
  • Fill in the boat (rowing and/or coxing)

First Day:

1.  Before 8:30am : 2 rowers needed to set up signs so people can find the boathouse (6 signs on shelves in back of boathouse; post at key locations on park roads).

2.  Arrive by 8:45 or 3:30 each day (depending on the session) to get ready.

1.  Some: Open the boathouse and set up equipment.

2.  Others: Greet parents and direct them to the boathouse.

3.  Introduce yourselves and get to know the kids (name, where they go to school, grade, etc...)

4.  Walk through the boathouse and show kids the parts of the boat.

5.  Get on the ergs, have one person demonstrate the stroke and then have the kids take some strokes.

6.  On the dock: take a boat down, put oars (only starboard side) in it, and have the kids take strokes on the dock while volunteers are holding on

7.  Take boat back up and put oars away

The rest of the session: review skills and information learned the day before, get a boat on water, and rowing away from the dock by the second day. Land workouts if bad weather. Check on signs daily, replace if needed.
