Where: Eide Ch. 10 does a pretty good job of covering linear regression, but for additional help try looking on for great examples.

Discussion

Alongside statistics, linear regression is best used as a predictor for future data. If you have a specific data set and you think you will know future data from experimental data, then you can use these methods to come up with an equation describing your line. Really useful in industry, especially if you want your boss to shell out a bunch of money for a project.

Concept Questions

What is the method of least squares, and how does it differ from the method of selected points?

Which regression method is more accurate?

How do you use semi-log and log-log data in the method of selected points?

What does the coefficient of correlation tell you about your data set? How is it calculated?

Review

Find the best equation of this line using the method of least squares.

X / Y
1 / 1
2 / 2
3 / 1.3
4 / 3.75
5 / 2.25

Use the method of least squares to come up with an equation for this data (hint: semi-log)

x / y
0 / 2.3
10 / 5.97
20 / 15.47
30 / 40.13

  • Calculate the coefficient of correlation.
  • Find an equation for this line using the method of least squares.
  • Based off of your data, what would you predict ice cream sales to be if the temperature reaches 27 ºC?

Use the method of least squares to come up with an equation for this log-log plot.
